In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Server move coming up SOON!

It is what it is, but certainly not what it was.

Just ordered a new server, so as soon as the hard drives come in and it gets set up, this site will be moving over to it. It's in a different data center entirely.

There will be little, if any, warning about when the move actually commences. The intention is to try to not lose any posts here, if possible, so if I have enough warning from the tech doing the move, I will lock this site down until the move has been completed. So if you try to log in here and can't get in, that will be what is going on. This is supposed to take place before the weekend arrives....

Even after the move, some things may not work properly until they get ironed out. If I remember correctly, the chat system was a major pain in the butt for quite a while after the last move. So it certainly wouldn't surprise me it that is the case again this time.

Anyway, just a heads up.

The new server should be substantially quicker than the present one.

Dual quad processor Cloverton
4 gig main ram
dual 73 gig 15K rpm SCSI harddrives running in Raid 0 config

Wow Rich, you must be a brave guy! Changing servers in the middle of hatching season!

And I thought I was brave for moving in the middle of January in Northern Illinois....:shrug01:

Good luck with the move, Rich.

Thanks, Kelli. Hopefully this won't be too bad. Done enough of them now that most problems are becoming familiar. Just as long as I remember what I had to do to fix them the last time.....

Actually my first clutch began hatching yesterday, so it's not crunch time yet. It will be a few more weeks before things start getting crazy around here.

I would like to get my domain hosting server moved as well, but I don't think that can happen right away. I can't have too many headaches piling up on my at one time.

Just a heads up that the move MAY take place tonight. Depends on how much burn in time they give the new server and when they can schedule the account moves over to it.

How long does a server move usually take?

I don't know. I have never done a server move that was "usual".....

Ahem, as I was saying........

Just got word that the hard drives that came in were the smaller ones, apparently for a different server. Mine are "supposed" to be in on Thursday.... :shrug01:

RAID 0 ??? That will be fast, but...

What is your backup situation like?

The server has a 250 gb backup drive which will back up the entire server nightly.

I also run a cron job that saves all the MySQL databases daily and I download them to my own PC for safekeeping.

I don't think anyone will die if 23 hours, worst case, worth of posts get lost in the event of a hard drive crash.

Getting four+ drives to do RAID 10 is rather expensive.....

lol - sure, NOW it works.
I'm STILL up, but won't be spending much time online...too much that I want to get done before I crash.

I hope the process didn't require you to be sitting close at hand, fretting or laboring, Rich.

btw - it looks like chat doesn't seem to be working properly, either...but that was expected

Hey Rich,
This thing is zipping! Thanks for the upgrades, I appreciate all the effort it took to get it up and going....it's almost as fast as the one I have at work! ;-) Angie

Yeah, today I have to play cleanup and see what isn't working. Probably will be days before everything is running smoothly........

Hopefully this will be all worthwhile with the speed increase that SHOULD be here now............

Thanks.

The links to product reviews, alternative classifieds and photo gallery aren't working but everything else seems to be up and going.

These appear to be working now.

Still don't have chat running. I'm not sure the java engine has been installed yet. To be perfectly honest, if I have to go through even a tenth of the headaches I went through during the last server move trying to get the chat running reliably, I will just scrap the damned thing. It's just not being used enough to warrant the place on my Excedrin list.
