In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

The BOI is getting just to be a little "Jerry Springer"

Don't get me wrong the BOI is an important forum, but is it just me or do you think some of the people the come here are the same type that dream about being on Jerry springer? I see a lot of unnecessary posts, that they're only purpose in to add more drama, there's just way to many trolls posting unnecessary BS if you ask me!

You mean like the post you just made? It seems to fit the description you provided, unnecessary etc.

A post which also violates the rules of the BOI and will undoubtedly be moved to a more proper forum as soon as one of the mods notices it.

You made similar comments in the Canadian BOI about 3 weeks ago...were you just so thrilled with what you came up with that you just had to bring it here? The fact that there have been an increasing number of off topic posts on the BOI is no secret...but this thread and your original post on the Canadian side are nothing more than extensions of the problem. This doesn't belong here. It is more suited to Fauna Feedback or Sound Off

I made similar comments, but didnt start a thread about the subject. Id just like to hear what some of you think that's all, maybe most of you enjoy it who knows, It drives me nuts when reading a thread full of silly useless comments.

You should know better than to start a BOI thread about it. This belongs in the Feedback forum.

Then dont read the BOI. plain and simple.

Its just how it is. and its not going to change anytime soon. Posts made on the BOI that might seem off topic after a thread has already begun, may still very well be related in some way, and while there can be lots of personal stuff going on, most... not all, most posts remain pretty relevant to the threads.

OK well I guess its just me then :shrug01:

No - it isn't just you. But the BOI wasn't the place for the discussion. Think about it - all you did was perpetuate the problem you are complaining about.
Now that it is an appropriate forum, let's consider the possibilities...how can we remedy the situation? There was a period of fairly rigid rules, and enforcement that was as strict as could be expected given the volume:moderator ratios. Unfortunately, or fortunately - depending on your outlook, it was recognized that the potential for allowing a scammer to use the system to his advantage was a detriment to the BOI. The rules were relaxed. Off topic posting was once a warnable offense...but, frequently, it was the seemingly off topic banter that aided in outing the bad guys. At what point was it diversionary vs disruption? How much leeway should be allowed? Can restraints be applied fairly and consistently, and still allow for case by case consideration (if you can answer yes, please explain how - - there are many people that would love to have some guidelines).

Yes, things get sidetracked...and that often makes the threads tedious to follow. BUT, the BOI works, and it is hard to argue with success. Many, if not most, of us would love to find a way to get all the benefits of the free-for-all approach while keeping threads on track and minimizing side discussion. Unfortunately, it just isn't that easy.

Moo,

We are discussing changing things so before you chastise him, stop and feel the pulse. :>poke2<:

He is far from alone in this feeling and it is being highly discussed.

I believe that there is a handful of fauna members that only come here to play Judge and Jury, when really they have nothing to do with the thread/topic at all! there posts really have nothing to add to the topic at hand, it makes it nightmare to sift/skim through a long thread.

You've already expressed that, as have others. I (and others) have already acknowledged that it is a problem that has been on the rise again of late...I don't think anybody is denying it. My point is, sitting here griping about it doesn't do anything. I have already stated some of the problems inherent in trying to address this issue, and opened the door for constructive suggestions. Do you have any? If not, then you might do just as well by directing your frustration at the culprits that are derailing the threads...but then you would likely be part of the problem, lol.

Seriously, though, Bill, it isn't as if nobody has noticed what you are talking about...it just isn't something that is a simple fix.

Yes it is easy, get rid of the riffraff!!

Then getting rid of the "riffraff" would include you, correct? You posted a useless thread on a forum whereby it was not appropriate. Due to such, people have now wasted their time with regards to a thread that did not belong. Bye Bye.

With that being said, every person in the top 10 of the Karma system, every person posting in this very thread, have been guilty of posting off topic in BOI threads. It's not as easy as banning someone who is found guilty. Most of the users that have gone astray for a posting or two are also some of the most well respected members of Fauna. If you get rid of them then you get rid of the very people who have made Fauna "important."

Now, is it really so easy?

And please except my apology for doing so.

We all know who most of them are.

No. We don't know who "most" of them are...

You know the few who bother you, personally... and have made frequent off topic BOI posts on both the american and canadian boards getting into the back and forth backbiting and pissing contests with them.

This is just another one of those situations where "we all" should have been written as "me and a few of my close friends who happen to agree with me on this specific subject" You don't want the BOI cleaned up, you want the four or five people you have a personal issue with booted off, there's a huge difference between the two situations.

No, we all don't know who most of them are. We all might have a few in particular that might fit the bill, but do you think everyone's list will be the same?
Do you think you are qualified to make that determination? Do you think your opinion of what constitutes "riffraff" will be unilaterally agreed with by the balance of the community? I seriously doubt it. Few if any issues here have ever been agreed upon by anywhere near the full participating membership.

Getting rid of someone is not the answer because it requires a line to be drawn and defined specifically. We have discussed what constitutes "off topic" elsewhere on this site. It might have been in the mod forum though, so you may not have seen it.
The only thing determined was the fact we all cannot agree on how exactly to define off topic.

Something may or may not be changed in the future regarding this, but I can say with a fair amount of confidence that it will not involve the permanent removal of offenders unless it's through the warning system, and even then it's not necessarily permanent.

No, your wrong, did I mention anyone in particular?
