During a discussion last night on fauna chat we talked about brand and generic names of medicine/drugs. Some people weren't aware of the difference, and I only knew it from covering it last week in EMT-B class.
Brand name is the name a company associates with its product where the generic name is the actual compound itself or the active ingredient in a product.
Some common herp ones are (Brand/Generic):
Nolvusan S = chlorhexidine diacetate
Ivomec = ivermectin
Panacur = fenbendazole
Flagyl = metronidazole
Baytril = enrofloxacin
Well why would you want to know this?
Simple, it is easier to get on the same page as one another or a veterinarian or when doing research on an item.
In herp terms, if I was to say, "Here, hold my brown snake.", you would most likely think of Storeria dekayi and wouldn't have much problem doing so but I could be referring to a Pseudechis australis which, as one of the more venomous snakes in the world, would probably make you second guess doing so.
