In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I have been considering doing a show for the first time this or next season. I am hoping to hit the 200+ eggs this season. A Repticon show now comes to my home town twice a year. Based on last year, I didn't have eggs the first time they came, and was sold out the second time. Granted my production has increased this season from last, but I can't make up my mind to risk it. Do you sell as many as you can in the months before the show, and not have enough for your table? Or save them for the show and risk not selling them? The exposure could be worth the small loss on the front end. After all, you will still HAVE the snakes to advertise after the exposure.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Personally I use to do 80 Shows a year. Just recently I started posting online to ship stuff. Use to hate the hassle of shipping. But I found unless it is around Tax time that its a lot harder to move a big number of animals at a show. It also depends on what you do. If you have everything from 10 dollar lizards to 2000 dollar ball pythons. You will do good at shows. But if you have one or 2 species. Then your better off online or wholesaling. So now I do 24 shows a year. And they are 2 shows that are super close to home. Thats just my expierence. As usually you will get the same or better money online for an animal and don't have the overhead you do with doing a show. Of course you don't have the atmosphere of a show online. But its all up to you.

Hey Shane! We are planning on around 150+ eggs this year if everything goes as planned. So far we have 40+ eggs and more ready to drop anytime. (Gosh I love this time of year lol) And like you we are contemplating on setting up this Fall at the Raleigh show. Our plans are to keep all of our babies and hold out for the Fall show, but who knows.

Maybe we could share a table if things work out that way. I need to see how things play out, but will surely have this on the front burner should you think its a good idea.

I only do about 1 show a month but it's more about getting out and talking reptiles than about selling to me. There is no way I would purposely keep from selling online just to have some stock for a show. To be honest, the way the reptile market has been for the last 2 years or so I wouldn't hold off on any chance to move babies I produce this year.

If you have never done a show sign up and enjoy the experience. That's the only way to tell if it is for you or not. I wouldn't plan on moving and entire years production in one show. It would be nice if it was that easy....

We may already be sharing a table with my cousin and his wife. But I'm not 100% sure yet. If not, we'd love to share one with you Shane. Guess we'll see ya in Raleigh in a few hours lol.

Shane,

By vending you support shows, meet other vendors and people in the industry, get exposure, and despite the hassle of setting up I bet the experience will be fun. A table shared with another might be a reasonable cost and might even be deductible. I say go for it!!!

The potential for future sales as well as meeting people you would not have met (i.e. Fauna members to other breeders) and the possibility of forming friendships I believe is well worth taking the chance of vending a show. With vending shows I have experienced all the above.

I would say take the chance and set-up, for all of the good reasons listed above. The only thing I would personally do, and it is just my opinion and based on the million shows a year in my area.

I would clearly research the shows in your area or where you are willing to drive to and pick and choose the best shows that will most likely suit you best. In my area there are so many shows yet only a handful are worth attending much less setting up at. Some can barely get 25 vendors and a few hundred buyers thru the door, people are getting tired of that and they are only getting worse.

Find a nice reputable show near you and go all out, the experience can be very rewarding.

Shows are always going to be great local exposure for you and your business. I would not give up an online sale for show inventory though. Its a tough market these days so any good exposure will be positive in the long run.

I agree, still sell your animals online and whatever you have left at the time of the show, then sell the rest there. Whether you sell 100 animals or 1 animal, its the point that your getting publicity and your meeting other vendors. I like attending shows just to chat with everyone and meet new people. Another thing you could look forward to is, vending always means not only selling to customers but trading between other vendors too so you never know what kind of deals/trades will come your way!

I do one or at most two shows a year. I don't do them for the sales, although that's always a nice perk if things are moving, but I do them for the good time with other people I only see a couple of times a year. It's like a little mini vacation for me. Once in a while it's a great show and I'll sell a lot, but more often I barely break even if that considering all expenses.
I took about 10 years off and didn't do any shows, but now I enjoy the couple I do, it's always a good time.

One benefit of a show that some don't think about until they've done one is the opportunity to wholesale. With balls for instance, there's always a surplus of offspring that are harder to move, normals from a co-dom breeding, low value hets, etc. There's always two or three vendors at the shows that you can wholesale these to, admittedly for a low price, but it's better than having to feed them for what may be months while you sell one here or there.

Best thing to do is just get a table and try it, and go in with no expectations other than to have a good time. I'd suggest you not vend alone. Even if you're not splitting a table, at least take someone who can help you run it. Going alone means you're tied to the table all weekend and can't really enjoy the show yourself.

In your area I'd probably opt for the fall Raleigh or Columbia shows over the Concord show. My opinion on that may be biased though since I've only done the Concord show once. Other vendors have told me past shows were better than the one last fall that I did.
However, there's a new show that is going to be in Hickory in October and it has a real good venue, so it may well be an option as well. I'm considering doing it myself, have to wait and see how the season goes.

I wouldn't try to hold things just for the show though. Take sales when they present themselves, because you can never be sure how a show will be. And like John said, if you've got a table full of one or two species, especially if it's balls or something, then you're likely to do less overall at a show than if you had more variety.
I wouldn't do a show a month or anything, not that I would have the stock to do that anyway, but it's always fun to be behind the table once or twice a year.

The ones I don't hijack.

Wow Shane, you are practically my neighbor....

I vote vend this year. The local repticon seems to have a pretty good turn out, plus it's not like you have to worry about massive travel expense. Certainly getting out in the public eye and letting people put a face with a name on website can do wonders.

I live right by the older Carolina Mall. My folks are on highway 73 near Odell School.

It's amazing how many herp folks right around here and I've just never noticed.

I live in a development right off 73, near RCCC. My Grandparents live off 73, Jim Johnson Rd, right behind The old General Store, through the woods any way. Small world!

Wow yeah it's a very small world! Hopefully I'll run into you at show here in the near future. I was browsing your site and you have some really nice animals! This year will not be a vending year for me, but I'll probably have enough stock next year to justify a show.

Thank you for the kind words. Good luck in the future
