In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I produce hundreds of rats every week. I have fed Ziegler and Mazuri lab blocks, hog feed, and Doggy Bag dog food.

The Doggie Bag is BY FAR the best feed that I have used so far.

So, the difference isn't HUGE HUGE, but there is a difference. The Doggy Bag is better.

I won't waste time arguing it, but I convinced another large scale breeder to switch his entire colony over to Doggy Bag and he is loving every second of it.

Dog food in and of itself presents no problems to rats. Artificial coloring, high protein levels, or some ingredients can cause problems. However, Doggy Bag is absolutely suitable rat food.

That's just my two cents, but what do I know? I only produced about 20,000 rats this year LOL.

I have fed dog food in the past when I couldn't get the rodent blocks. I have 1/2" hardware cloth that holds the food. Will the dog food fall right through? How do you feed it to them? Thanks!

cant find it around here in East Tn. ....not anymore.....help....Brandon

You may not be able to find it in stock, but you can get it locally. Go to any feed store that carries Purina products and they can order it for you. You may have to buy 5 or 10 bags, and you may have to wait a few days for it to come in, but they can get it.

Purina Rat Chow is available to pretty much all feed stores, and most can get Mazuri as well. They just don't stock it, especially in rural areas for obvious reasons.
I used to have a feed store here get it for me regularly.

I use 1/2" HWC as well.

The feed that I use is large enough that it does not fall through.

half inch as well,........but that whole dogfood thing really bothers me..Thanks for all the replies.....but let me ask ....are you breeding 20 thousand rats to sell to the consumer/industry or are you feeding them to your huge collection because there is a difference when you say its good enough..How are your snakes doing, breeding, acting ,pooping, growing and how are their colors.........I hope it wasnt ------- pro you switched over to doggie bag..lol...then I'd know the results.....:ack2:....give me the down low

All of my snakes eat the rats that I produce. I have had ZERO problems with any of my snakes. About 10 people that I know personally feed my rats to their animals with no problems. I couldn't even begin to imagine how many snakes have eaten my rats LOL. I haven't had one complaint.

I feed Native Earth (formerly Harlan ($26.99 for 40#)) and add about 15-20% of Avoderm Beef & Rice dog food ($50 for 35#)and Seed blend ($9 for 10#). The rats absolutely love the dog food and a few select seeds more than anything. I have just recently started tracking kitten weight against what the lactating mothers are eating and I plan on switching the food ratios up to bust on myth or another about food. Keep an eye out for the thread later in the year.

BTW, to the guy in TN, shipping was fairly cheap for me so I guess they are near by, plus with the promo code "PET15" you can save 15% on the Native Earth here:

If you go on Petco.com right now they have an online sale on the Kaytee Forti-diet Pro health in five lb bags for only 6.46 with free shipping over $55. Thats about $1.08 per lb!! Make sure you get the 5lb, they have the 3lb for the same price on the website.
