Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I am not putting blog down, but this is why the pet trade is in trouble! They are selling these "farm" iguanas to adults and children who have NO idea of what it takes to raise it to adulthood.

It has gotten to the point where baby Igaunas are so cheap that they are considered throw away pets. Buy it, look at it  for a while, throw it away when it dies! (Usually within a month).

Oh, and not to rant on..... but IF ones does make it to adulthood, it gets so big they are afraid of it. The animal then ends up in a shelter somewhere, where they have no idea how to take care of it either.

For all those people out there looking to buy an Iguana, DON"T! Research the requirements for this animal first. If you feel yo can provide for these requirements, then ADOPT one of the hundreds available in shelter across the nation.

Thanks you for hearing my rant.

There is not such a thing as a tame baby iguana from a regular pet store. If they act tame that is the first clue there is something wrong. Your iguana is very sick if his limbs are swollen and needs to go to a vet. There are lots of good sites online that can give you proper diet info. Lettuce and carrots wont cut it . You need to have lots of different kinds of fruits and veggies. Get some full spectrum lighting as well. Make sure your ig is in a quiet part of the house to begin with so it will feel comfortable. Look at Mellisa Caplans site and you will learn what you need to know.

why would u buy a "Tame" baby iguana from a pet store? and if this is the case, u didnt study the animal enough..and lettuce and carrots? i have nothing to say about that, that is animal neglect on your behalf as well...

yes it could be an imported WC ig, and yes it could have gentic problems,

on top of which, are u ready for at least a 15 year commitment to the animal? if u say maybe then u are arent, and i hope u have at LEAST $1,500 to spend on the animal a year...

but YOU as the owner have responsibilty to pick out a healthy ALERT iggy, in good health and at least give it the CORRECT diet, and need be, vet visits...

this stuff makes me sick, i cant go on anymore about it really, considering i have 4 rescue igs, which i love...

just my 2 cents...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, let me say from whut haz bin done so fer why nott jist force feed the iggy twu pink-ie meeses, then give it a drink of nyquell too hep it sleep to git bettar, an mebbe it du bee lonely an need a nothar frend frum thet same petshop by u.

The again - if you were actually serious and not joking, which I doubt, then give the iguana to someone who may be able to save its life and go to a library and read up on a new hobby before you help abuse any more animals. <img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>  Anyone think that bogzilla and Sirvander are the same person?

Please research the specific care needs of your animal.  The best source of information about the care of Iguanas is www.anapsid.org owned by Melissa Kaplan.  Ms. Kaplan also wrote the book "Iguanas for Dummies" published in the US by IDG books.  It is readily available at all the online retailers as well as at bigger bookstores such as Barnes and Noble.  I firmly suggest this book to anyone keeping iguanas.

Your specific iguana Definately needs a visit with a good vet.  Call ahead and ask the vet specifically what experience they have had with reptiles.  Also ask if they belong to the ARVA.  If they have no idea what you are talking about, pick a different vet.

I understand the feelings of frustration with the pet trade that were expressed in this post, however I also feel that when some poor person unknowingly takes in an animal that they are un-prepaired to care for and asks for help, educating that person rather than mocking them may be the better way to handle the situation.

Have a good day.

By the way.  Having re-read that again, if the original post was some kind of joke, then I find it in terribly poor taste.  I am all for a bit of humor, but I failed to find anything funny about this.

The first thing I thought when I read these initial posts was that we have one person posting as two in order to stir up the mess that has followed.  I'd say that IF there ever was an animal involved, it's quick demise could be the most humane thing that could possibly to happen to it since it was purchased by him/them.

Why doesn't somebody help this guy instead of telling him just what he's doing wrong. A they are right, you shouldn't purchase iggies from a pets store, usually they have no clue what they're doing. Get that Iguana to a vet right away, and bring a fresh stool sample. Lettuce and carrots have next to no nutritional value. And don't feed them "bugs" Iguanas are vegetarians. Dandilion greens, collard greens, mustard greens, prickly pear and Yucca roots are the way to go. Fruits can be used occasionally as treats and to get a picky iguana to eat. An adult iguana can reach almost 7 ft. They need a cage that is at least 7-8 ft tall, by 7ft wide, by 5 ft deep. You need a big cage. Also make sure he is getting proper lighting, IE. UVA and a bulb that is rated at least5.0 UVB. He should also have a basking area thatranges from 90- 95 degrees with the ambient temp being high 70s to mid 80's in the rest of the cage. You can usually get this with a basking light. They like to climb so give them plenty of perches. You also occasionally need to dust their food with calcium and vitamin supplements, depending on what you feed them. Iguanas are a huge commitment and require more care then most dogs. You should never impulse buy one ore buy one just to have a reptile. If you're looking for something easier, find a GOOD home for your iguana and try a Leopad Gecko instead.

Oh I also forgot to mention that Iguanas like humidity, I keep my boy at somwhere between 50 and 70 percent, and if somehow you manage to save your iguana and decide to keep him after you've done some research, you need to socialize him everyday. Pet store iguanas are usually stressed and agressive and if you don't intervene with some researched taming techniques you will have a 6-7 foot long agressive lizard. On another note, I feel for you, for your first iguana you took the hard route. My ig, Mesa was from a Pet Store too. The difference is I had kept reptiles for years before I got him, I did my research and I knew what I was in for. I call him a rescue because the store had a 20 in Iggy in a ten gal with no lighting and tons of crickets. This should be what you are trying to avoid,

yea my iguana won't eat, but he isn't puffed up or anything. i just got him sunday at a swap. he looks and moves around fine he just won't eat. I don't want to take him to the vet bcuz i heard they give them a shot that makes em really aggressive. help

Remember in the chat when you mentioned you were going to a reptile swap and you asked "which was better, snakes or lizards?" and you were told that for you, the best thing was a book- because you obviously didn't know a damn thing about taking care of reptiles?

And the last line of the above post proves you still don't.

Give the iguana to someone who knows how to care for it and don't be such a dumbass in the future. Learn then buy.

First try to remember, the vet is your friend but it MUST be a reptile vet. Not a small animal vet or a horse vet. They are not really qualified to look at your animal. If their practice is mostly non reptiles the odds are pretty good they are not the vet you want.
You can try this link to find a proper vet nearest you.
http://www.anapsid.org/vets/illinois.html
I have to drive over 100 miles to any good reptile vet so I hope you find one closer.

Now on feeding; What foods have you offered and how are they prepared?
What are the temps and humidity in your Iggys enclosure? How are you heating?
Can you post a pic of your Ig here? Full side shot, top down shot & underside shot nose to just past the vent.

Sorry Mr. Haley
Didn't know you were already on this one. Guess I need to spend some time in chat once in a while.

By all means feel free to point him in the right direction. The direction away from vets wantonly giving out aggression shots direction.

I've pretty well run out of patience with him already. If you can convince him to pay attention and actually learn something, more power to you.

Haha, There seems to be some hostility on this thread, I'm almost afraid to ask, but has anyone done any research on the new commercial diets for iguanas by petzone and Zoo Med? Obviously fresh greens are always the way to go but I'm always looking to add a little more variety to my Boys (and girls) diet. Please don't bite my head off, just trying to expand my knowledge a little bit and my own research efforts have been sadly fruitless.

Please do not think I am biting your head off, I am not.
I presently have 2, 7 year old Iguana rescues that have been fed nothing but that type crap since they were first purchased by the woman who turned them over to me last summer. Neither came to me over 36 inches and I actually had to work with them and use all the food favorites of my 5 foot 7 year olds to get them to take real food.
Incase you cannot tell I think those diets are garbage.
IMO, If a person cannot afford or find real fresh veggies and fruits then they should not try to keep an Iguana.
