In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Has anyone been to the dixie reptile show in Alabama? Is it worth the trip about 4 hours for me. how many vendors? Is it a big show?

Thanks Tori Hill

Tori, from what I've heard (I've never been), it's fairly small. Hotel conference room type show probably 20 vendors or less. Doesn't mean it's a bad show, but I don't know if it's worth 8 hours of driving. Hope this helps.

Tori, it is not in a hotel.. It is on the campus of University of Alabama(Birmingham).. It used to be in a hotel..
We are vendors there, and we drive almost 7 hours every month to attend.. It is a small show, however, it is always very profitable for us, otherwise, we would not attend..
It is definately not a Daytona show, however, we find it to be very fun..
If you are looking for Albino balls, pieds, stuff like that, then i would not attend..
There is a spider breeder and several other types of breeders and dealers.. It is just your basic small time reptile show..
I would guess Terry gets roughly 700-1100 people thru the door monthly..
Reptiles magazine screwed up his ads, so if the directions you have arent to UAB, call Terry and have him give you directions..
Hope to see you tommorrow.

I have been to the Dixie show a few times (it is not that far from me). It is a small show, but you can find pretty good deals there. It is nothing fancy, and as was already said, you will not find super high dollar morphs there. However, there is usually a pretty good selection.

The show has 30 to 50 tables a month,as for high end animals we are working on that.womas and an albino ball python were at the Jan 17th show.we also have a 2 day show in September of this year. Thanks Terry Heuring / Dixie Reptiles

I went to the Jan 17 show and must say I was pleasantly surprised overall for a small show. There were a number of good looking corn snakes, king snakes, and milk snakes in particular, and an interesting array of other animals (geckos, scorpions, chameleons, burms, etc.).

My complaints with regard to the show would be that it is small (but I knew that going in), it's lacking in signage to find it, and apparently it was okay with the show organizers for someone to display/attempt to sell a Canadian lynx (not, by the way, a reptile) housed for hours at a time without food or water. The poor thing was clearly terrified, though the cage was adequately-sized and clean.

I probably won't make the show a regular destination because it takes considerably more time to drive there and back (~5 hrs round trip) than it does to look at everything on display, but if you're nearby it's definitely worth the trip and I will probably be back.

That was the first and last time you will see a lynx at the show,I was told it was tame, but it did looked stressed.I am also told they do not respond well to such drastic changes in their environment.Thank you for the input. Terry Heuring - owner Dixie reptiles

Terry,
I am very glad to hear that I won't be seeing a lynx at the show again. Bringing it seemed like a poor judgement call on the part of the person who had it, and I hope he or she learned that was not an appropriate environment for the cat as well.

Other than that, as I said, I enjoyed the show. You obviously put a lot of work into it. I think a highly visible sign in the plaza outside the center would be a good idea, though.

Thanks.

Dixie Reptile Show

No, its not a huge show... But it is a very good show, very healthy specimens overall. People are very friendly and since the show is smaller it seems like the vendors are able and willing to take time to talk. (lots of time in the big show its hard to even get their attention let alone have a real discussion over a $100 snake... They'll talk your head off for a $500 snake though)

I drive 4 hours to it from Mississippi about every other month. (or I should say when I feel I can get another snake into the house without my wife killing me!) I take my two boys and we have a great time...

I would go to a larger show if there was one within 4 or 5 hours of Tupelo but there isnt.(is there?).. But I certainly would STILL go to the DIXIE show too.

Some of the animals I hae bought...

0.1 Unicolor Cribo... (got a MAJOR deal on that one)

1.1 normal pueblans... (the best normals you'll ever see.. From Jewell...absolutley no ticking )

Bought three different corns for my boys...

All animals were immaculate, cheap, healthy, (and still are)

(But they do need to post a better sign outside)

Do any of y'all buy feeder mice at the show?

I haven't, but I am curious about it. If there is a vendor there selling good frozen mice I might be interested in using them next time I need to stock up. ALSO I want to know if they have any live mice there, I'd like to get a couple live fuzzies for my hognose.
(he goes off food in the winter, but will usually hit live mice).

I like the show, and admit an evil corner of me is disappointed to have missed seeing the lynx. I have read that they are tame-able and too many of them spend their whole lives in fur farms. How much did they want for the cat?

PS I in no way would want to, or be able to, buy an exotic cat, I just think they're beautiful and wish they weren't in the fur farms being abused.

PPS a friend of mine has said zoos get calls often from people with big/exotic cats as pets that cannot manage them. A lynx is one thing; a tiger or cougar - !!!!

Judy,
When I went there was definitely a vendor selling live mice. I do not know if there were any frozen mice available, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I don't remember the posted price for the lynx, if one was posted. They are certainly beautiful animals, but a reptile show seemed an inappropriate place (to me) to sell a lynx even if you had one. I saw a show on Discovery a week or two ago that said that there are now more tigers that are privately owned by Americans than there are in the wild in the entire world. I'm glad to have the species preserved, but that doesn't seem like the right way to go about it. At least the Canadian lynx is native to this continent. The privately owned tigers, lions, etc., aren't so lucky.

I agree!

Apparently captive 'pet' lynx are declawed, a practice I HATE. As for having tigers, lions, etc. that's nuts. IMHO. Someone told me about a person having a 'pet' bobcat that was not only declawed but had his canine teeth pulled. What is the point of treating an animal like that? Anyway like I said, I'd love to SEE the lynx but as fond as I am of cats I don't think it fair to the animal, much less smart for me, to own a lynx as a pet.

OK I figure this is as OT as it needs to get. Thanks for the input about the mice.

I have been going to the Dixie show for about 2 years now on and off. It isn't a Daytona show but you can find good deals on animals and supplies. I have only bought one animal from the show and was very pleased with it, mostly I get frozen rats and mice and the ever much needed cans of PAM to have just in case I ever do see a mite.

Dixie Reptile Show Comments

I have attended the Dixie Show every month since 12/02 (the last show in the hotel), and have had a great time every month. Terry's a great guy and most of the vendors are very laid back, pleasant and chatty, and it's a great environment. Although high-end animals aren't a dime a dozen, there are some great animals there with reasonable variety. The last several shows, we have set up as a vendor and have had good sales, and will continue to attend/vend Terry's show at any and all show dates. -Eric Lago *MS Reptilian Hobbyists*
