    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Rack systems, thermostat placement and #s

Ok if i have a rack system consisting of 18 cages stacked 9 high and two deep how many thermomstats will I need and what number cages will I need them in. For example I'm guessing 3 thermomstats with probes in levels 3,6, and 9. Shouldn't matter if its the left or right one. If thats correct what could I expect the temps of the hot spot of cages 1,2,4,5,7, and 8 to the the three probes will be set at 90. Again I'm askign not sure if it would be better to have the probe set at other cages or not.

thermostats on a rack

I have a single thermostat on my animal plastics rack. It has a single heat cable through the entire rack, so there isn't any way to have more than one.

Just set up a thermometer, and check the temperatures on every level--if they hold steady, setting the heat is easy. Put the probe for the thermostat directly on the heat tape/cable.

This assumes that you have a single line of tape or cable heating the entire rack.

If not, then you need a seperate thermostat and probe for every seperate heating device. If the temperatures in your room vary widely from the top to the bottom, then either install a ceiling fan to circulate the air, or use at least 2 seperate thermostats and lines of cable--one for the bottom cages, one for the top cages. The ceiling fan would be more economical.

If temperatures tend to vary, use 2 or 3 thermometers for a 9 shelf rack--the $15.00 type with the remote probe works well. That will allow you to keep track of the actual temperatures, and adjust your thermostat accordingly. Don't rely on the thermostat setting to track your temperatures.
