I have three adult rats: 2 hooded (1 male, 1 female) and their son, a large black male. The female has had at least 2 litters. I haven't handled them much, so they aren't used to people.
With them is a large cage - 17 inches or so square by 48 inches high. It is made of metal screen shelving, so it is open and airy. Metal tray for the bottom, top is a clear piece of pexiglass held down by water bottles. Lots of room for the rats to run and play. At this point I have some food to include, may be gone later.
