albino breeding group - price check?????

I'm considering an "albino w. hognose breeding group" for $4800:

1.0 albino (16")
0.1 100% het albino (22")
0.1 red phase (14")
0.1 normal (27")
0.1 66% het albino (8")

All from different lines. The albino male and het female could breed this season, so the owner claims I could make back the investment by producing four albino hatchlings at the current market price. These are NOT proven breeders.

Comments/Opinions? Does this price sound reasonable?

It sounds possible, but probably not. The only definate you can count on would be the albino male, and then the 100% het female. The others are risks and het producers. Always think worse case scenario when investing. Personally I think the price is a bit too high, but it is a nifty project. Hoggs rules.

I saw that ad too. The price is WAY too high...just about twice as much as the group is actually worth.

The 1.0 albino should be no more than $1500. The 100% 0.1 het should be around 300-400 (500 max). The 66% 0.1 het shouldn't be more than $150. And finally, the two normals shouldn't cost more than $200 together. Adding these together should be $2350 max. This guy is out of his mind.

Yeah, sounds like he's trying to base his asking price on projected\expected offspring and not the actual value of the animals. Both seem inaccurate, but either way that is no way to determine an asking price. Offer him what they are worth, if he declines it is his loss. No one will pay that much for that group. No one sane atleast.

Two of those females, the red and the 66%, won't breed for at LEAST one more year as well.

I'd take a pass if he's firm on the price.

Thanks for the input. I did the math too and would rather put my cash into some high quality hatchlings to raise up. But I thought I'd check, since adult albinos are rarely for sale...

Wait a second dudes..

The price of a 16" albino should be the same price most people are charging for hatchlings(1500)? I would say its worth more. Same goes for the het, it's too big to charge hatchling price for it at that size, right? Go to the boa classifieds on KS and compare prices of sub adults and hatchling albinos...or any snake for that matter, the closer it's gets to breeding age the higher the price goes to an extent. I agree the price is too high but....

Yes, I agree with you on that part. But when you get up into the thousands for snakes, age really doesn't make a difference anymore. I've seen other thousand dollar baby snakes sold for the same price as a subadult and vice versa. When you're in the price range of the normal phase hognoses ($50-75), yeah, typically adults sell for twice as much, but when you're paying $1500 for one snake, a few twenties more or less is not gonna make that much of a difference. Plus the $1500 mark is the average. I've seen them for $1300 and hets for $200-300 so the prices I projected may just as well be fitting for an adult.

Since he still has them up for sale I guess the concensus was correct that the price was too high. Here is how i would value the group.

1.0 albino (16") $2,000
0.1 100% het albino (22") $750
0.1 red phase (14") $100
0.1 normal (27") $125
0.1 66% het albino (8") $150

Total $3,125

That would be individual retail prices. As a group, they should actually be discounted somewhat.

I would say that anything under $3,000 would be a reasonable deal if you are looking to get into this project.

Also, bear in mind that the seller seems to be a relative unknown. Hets and possible hets from an unknown quantity are always a major risk

I agree with some of that. Individually, I don't think I would pay $750 for the het. even though it's adult size. As far as possible hets, I've always sold(and only buy) mine at "normal" prices, and if the buyers prove them out it's a free bonus. Now I'm not talking about balls where it's worth a gamble to try and prove out possible hets for a $20,000 or even $5,000 animal, just normal stuff like Albino corns, CA kings, Nelsons, and probably would include Hogs, even though it's a newer morph. Now this is only my philosophy, and my own personal opinion, not meaning to slight the advertiser, he has a right to sell and get what ever the market will bear. So as a group I might pay $2600 shipping included. I'm probably lowballing a realistic price, but like I said, I'm not to keen on paying markups for hets.

It is a little crazy that he hasn't budged a little on his price, when he re posts it. At this point I'd either reduce the price, or take them off the market and start breeding them. The ad still says they are in brumation.
