Like my dear ol dad, a 20 year Navy Vet, used to say,..."Holy Mackarel, Annie!" I had another experience today that I just had to share with everyone. I tried to feed my new mother of 11 eggs, a mouse rolled in calcium suppliment, and vitamim B complex today, and she would have none of it. I chased her round and round the cage with the mouse to the point of frustration. Then it hit me,...EUREKA!!! Try the egg trick! So I took the mouse in question, back to the kitchen, got one egg, [chicken egg, that is], out of the frij, broke it, beat it up good, then plopped the mouse into the egg, and rolled it around real good. Then I took that mouse back in, and showed it to her again. As soon as she smelled the difference,...WHAMMO!!! SHE WENT NUTS!!! She has always been a perfect lady at feeding time. Very calm, sedate, and down right polite. Carefully sniffing, and gently taking the food item from the tongs. But not dropped on the floor. But when she smelled that egg,...I'm telling you, she was like a pit bull on pizza!!! A half starved paranna!!! WICKED BAD!!! She darn near ate ME!!!
That's not the end of it. I also have a new aquisition. He's about 9 months old, and a VERY picky eater. Which is partly why he is still smaller than most new born Indigos! Consequently Iv'e named him "Flea". So far he has not been willing to take ANYTHING on his own, from me, exept goldfish. And then ONLY if left with it over night. And then ONLY one at at time. So after I saw the feeding response I got from her, it occured to me that I should try it on this little guy as well. So I dunked a thawed rat pink in the egg, placed it in the hole of his hide box, and...you guessed it,...
WHAMMO!!! Not once, but twice! He ate two!! And he wanted MORE!!! I'll let him digest that first. But man what a releif to get that kind of response from an animal Iv'e been so worried about!
So there you have it. Evidence that Indigos LOVE eggs! Try this with your Indigos. But be warned,...THEY WILL EAT YOU IF YOU AREN'T CAREFULL!!! I'm not kidding. Try it. You won't be disapointed.
This experience has lead me to believe that Indigos probably eat eggs like crazy in the wild,...quail, turtle, doves, killdeer, other snakes, maybe even each others! As for me, I'm now looking for a "connection" for captive bred quail eggs, and turtle eggs. Does anyone know of a source?
