In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

How about a Canadian Classifieds?

The Canadian BOI is very popular and I was wondering why don't we have a Canadian classifieds. It can be for keepers in Canada and also exporters. I find it is very tiring to search for exporters. Just a tought. Thanks.

Cheers,
JJ

Depends on how much demand there is for it, I guess. In this case, I want the demand to be there FIRST, before I would consider setting it up.

I would like to see one
problem is, no one knows to look for here.

Yeah, certainly a catch-22 situation. It takes traffic to attract traffic. Sometimes that can be alleviate with spending the bucks for advertising, but to be honest, I don't see the need to do something like that. If there is enough demand for a Canadian section here, I can certainly set it up, but I need to see the demand FIRST before I do it. If I see a lot of ads being posted something like "[for sale in Canada] ..............", well that might be an indication that it is warranted.

So if you want the Canadian traffic here, YOU have to start the ball rolling.

I'd love one, I am having a heck of a time looking through the site for canadian ads... actually right now I am on a search for the word CANADA and looking through about 200 posts :p

Put up a Canadian Classifieds.......there are people interested, it is easier to attract people once it is up and running. I can easily inform 30-50 people once I have a place for them to see. Consider it.....it will only grow, grow, and grow.

Thanks

Look at the success of the Canadian BOI. There's plenty of Canadian traffic on Fauna Classifieds and most Canadians browse the US classifieds here just to window shop and drool, since it is a hassel to export from the US. Perhaps giving it a 6-month trial and make a banner (link) to go on the CDN BOI, I am sure it will attract plenty of ads and traffic.

Not many will check this thread in the Feedback Forum, but most Canadians check the BOI. Just my 2-cents.

Cheers,
JJ

Actually I don't consider the Canadian BOI as being all that successful. It gets MAYBE one post per day there. Hardly what I would consider as being "successful".

I suspect the same would apply to a dedicated Canadian classifieds section. And if I were to make it such that each of the classified categories were in this section, then I would have over 30 new forums to have to contend with. Which, quite honestly, I just don't see being worthwhile based on the potential traffic if would create here.

Tell you what, though, if Canadians will post ads in the existing classifieds and perhaps preface their ad title with something like [Canada], and I see a fair amount of traffic, as such, THEN I will consider this request. Sorry, but at this point I just do not believe that the additional complexity that would need to be added here is justified by the traffic I now see from the Canadian marketplace.

But I am willing to be proven wrong, if that is the case. :)

Instead of doubling up the forums with US and CAN versions, I have a better idea.
I too hate drooling over the assortment of animals based almost solely in the US, in hopes of finding the odd person in Canada. I think an all Canadian forum would be a pretty quiet place. And most likely, many US vendors will double post in both classifieds if they are willing to import to Canada. Which really doesn't help us.

So to simplify things from a programming and maintenance point of view, there should instead be an added area next to each title with an icon. A flag perhaps. In the area where you fill out your classified add before you post it, there should be a little checklist that you have to check off.

Your Country:
[X] United States (default)
[_] Canada
[_] Other

US would be checked off by default for the ease of a majority of the posters. Then nest to every title could be a tiny US or CAN flag or just the letters CD or US or ? .
This would not cause the majority (US adds) any added grief and also provide an easy way for us Canadians to quickly scroll through each page and look for the little flag. Or have a "US/CD adds" only drop-box.

This also allows Canadian posters to place a classified add happy in the knowledge that it won't be lost in the countless US adds. They know that Canadians will be able to see it easily. The title for the Classifieds could be changed to US/Can Classifieds to help inform newcomers that there are in fact Canadian adds and users on here. The separate Canadian forums for adds on other commonly known sites, often sit empty or contain the same couple adds every month. A waste of bandwidth and time in my opinion.

This simple system would add complete, and obvious, diversity and segmentation between CAN and US adds but at the same time, keep everything organized and together.

What do you think?

Well, not a bad idea, but honestly I have to look at this as a business in the sense that I will have to spend money for the programming effort necessary to implement it, and balance that off based on what sort of return I will get from it. Sorry if this seems rather cold, but you probably have no idea at all on the amount of money I have spent on features that are rarely and barely used here. That just has gotten old over time, and I am trying to be more circumspect about such things. Heck, I recently re-enabled the classifieds section control panel, and upon reviewing the classified ad sections, it discourages me to see that it is going pretty much unused.

Sorry, but I am still not convinced that the effort needed is justified...

I completely understand. I've built and currently maintain 3 large websites for people I know. When they ask for something out of the ordinary that will take me time, hence their money, to do but I don't see any benifit in it for them, I recommend against it or suggest alternatives.
And in the end, you are right, this is a business for you and at times you need to put the wants aside and focus on the needs.
I just thought this may be a more functional and cost effective alternative to duplicating the forums. And I'm sure it would draw a bit more canadian traffic to the forums if you advertised the change. I know I don't shop here. I only browse the adds to ooo and ahh over the animals. I haven't actually run across a canadian based add yet. I shop local since I'm good friends with the exotic store owner here. Otherwise, I regret to admit, I take a quick peak on other forums that have Canadian classified sections.

Hopefully you will find some kind of justification to adding this feature since I, for one, would check the canadian adds daily. As I'm sure some others would too.

Thanks for listening anyway Rich.

Cheers

I think if there was an option for Canadians it would be used, more so than another site with both canadian and US classified since we all come here to use the BOI anyway. I think Garrets ideas would work fine and would be less work but I'm not the one that has to get it up and running or pay for it. Personally all I ever do here on this site is use the BOI. As a breeder if there was a Canadian section or option I would be posting my adds in it.
