I am curious as to who would be willing to participate in a Drymarchon spp. stud book project. I know several folks who are wary of such, though I believe much of this is due to a lack of understanding how such a project works. I attended an AZA class on stud book development / maintenance several years ago and have been giving consideration to attending another, but would like to have some feedback as to how many folks would be willing to participate in such. Keep in mind, a stud book attempts to maintain a record of the genealogy of captive specimens. I know the majority of people currently working with the genus are unable to trace their animal’s ancestry any further back than two - three generations, while most species, other than D. couperi and D. m erebennus, are WC or F1 – F2. I believe we need to get the ball rolling on such aproject as to preserve the genus for those wishing to work with them in the future.
Now, for those not wishing to participate in a stud book, I propose a “registry” system. This will not necessarily be used to tack lineage of specimens being listed, but rather maintain a record of who is working with what and how many. Such would provide a good knowledge base of what species are available and in what numbers and could be useful for those wishing to keep specimens as pets and / or educational tools.
If you would be willing to participate in one or the other, or even both! I ask that you give me the heads up…
Thanks in advance,
Jeff
