Responding to email notices you receive.

In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I read this thread and my opinion (whether its wanted or not) is that if you have to go this far to keep order on a message board than it signals a failure at the top (owner and mods) in the first place. I don't see these issues on other boards that I frequent. Maybe its time to stop asking for the bad behavior by making the warning points, reputation and post count a non-factor. Get rid of the warning points, make the reputation points something only the person who was pos/neg repped can see and make the post counts viewable only in the user profiles. Stop glamorizing bad behavior as has happened as long as I can recall and handle incidents privately and quietly. Only then will you have a functional community instead of a free for all.

Anyone can make wild guesses about what it takes for a website like this to thrive, and certainly I have gotten my share of them from a lot of people. But honestly, how is it that you know what is best to do here? Have you ever done something like this yourself? If so, please, I would really like to see what you have done.
Personally, I don't think I'm doing so badly here. Certainly a comparison to the other sites available in webland would tend to support my oddball notion.

I would say its pretty arrogant to state that you will only take suggestions from someone who has run a site like this. If you want a site where people talk about what they are wearing right now or how they shave themselves, then I would say you've succeeded. But as I have mentioned in other posts, the BOI and Leopard Gecko discussions is about all there is. I gave some valid suggestions to get rid of the dead weight and make the site more productive. But once again, you have shown why things will never change. It comes from the top and in this case, the top has a holier than thou attitude and can do no wrong. What sites are you comparing to? I can name one off the top of my head that does everything right and has fostered a community of people working towards the same goal, to educate people and work together to further the hobby.

I'd rather not say but I am sure the long list of people who are no longer allowed to post here could tell you. Out with the good, in with the bad. I have never been denied the opportunity to make suggestions but just as with those silly threads that Rich posts asking for input, it goes nowhere. I offered real, meaningful suggestions for turning this place into something better than it is and his response is basically that I know nothing since I have never run a site like this. Who has other than him? Is that the criteria for offering suggestions? I think its wonderful that there are all these members. Quantity over quality at its best...

I suggest, that you look at the way you talk to people. Talking to a mod and snidely making reference to a God complex is childish. Be respectful and thoughtful and you will get the same back.
I make my suggestions with the goal of helping, but I do not in fact have experience in running a site, and this is his site. I am happy to let him run it, I couldn't afford the Excedrin this place must cost.

Actually the bulk of this site is the result of MANY suggestions from many people. Nearly ALL of the discussion forums here were because people requested them. Others were here but are no longer when I decided they just aren't working. I took what I felt were the best of them, along with my own ideas, and built it this way. Not everyone agrees, of course, but they can go where ever else they want to in order to satisfy their need to be at a site that fits what they want out of it. I have had quite a belly full from know-it-alls who may make some off the wall suggestion, that I felt were just not in the best interests of this site nor myself, and of course they got their panties all in a wad over my not taking their suggestion as the obvious written on the holy tablet proclamation they felt it was. Sorry, but these are MY decisions to make, regardless of what some back seat drivers may think otherwise. I openly solicit opinions on a lot of things, but I am not REQUIRED to utilize any of them if I decide not to.
Quite honestly, if anyone feels they can do better at this then I am, they either have already done so, or they will in the future. I just don't believe someone with the *answers* is going to NOT do so. Yeah, maybe the BOI is the main draw here, but it sure beats being a website that has NO draw whatsoever, now doesn't it? The rest will come along in time as I try to tweak things to make that happen.
As for people not being allowed to post here any longer, name more then one (1) who is permanently banned. As far as I know there is ONLY one person who has been permanently banned, and NO ONE can say he didn't have fair warning. All of the rest are simply suspended pending their paying the $10 fine because of violations of the rules on this site. The fact that they choose to NOT pay the fine and come back is THEIR decision, and not mine. Quite personally, I really don't care either way what they do.
And quite honestly, and in my own opinion, your statement " Out with the good, in with the bad." is about one of the silliest things I have heard in recent memory. It only makes sense if you consider that in the world you are proposing that the "good" are incapable or unwilling to follow the rules here I have set in place to try to make this a better place for everyone involved. And, of course, the "bad" are the only ones capable of doing so. Kind of a cock-eyed way of looking at the world, now isn't it? But in any event, in case you don't GET it, that is not the case on this site.
And of course, with the above in mind, a questioning mind would just have to ask with your attitude about such members being "good" for this site, just exactly how would your opinions about how to run this site fit into that world view? You apparently desire to have such members back in here, so I have to admit that the "helpfulness" of your suggestions has to be a bit suspect with that in mind. I don't believe myself, nor many others here, want those "good" folks back if the rules have to be changed in order to accommodate their mannerisms.

My suggestions were meant to be constructive and you disagree. I certainly don't think you are a bad guy for not agreeing with my opinions. Nor do I think I am the good guy for not agreeing with yours. The mods on this site (Owens for one) have a long track record of doing the same things that got other people fined/suspended with no accountability for their actions. You did say one truthful thing though and that is that the results will speak for themselves. Of course, until I am fined and suspended (and I don't feel I have done anything so far to warrant it) I will keep speaking my mind. If I am still here when those results ever happen, I will be the first in line to kiss your ring.
As far as those who have been removed from the site either through suspensions due to their own actions or in some cases responding to your antagonizing mods, if my suggestions were in place and things were dealt with privately instead of out in the open in a baiting manner, maybe some of those people would still be here contributing like they should be.
