i have a 20 L tank and am debating on whether or not i should get a pacman frog or a corn snake. i do have uth heaters that i can use for the tank for heat and all. i have some questions. What is the best substrate for the tank? i have bed a beast and peat moss. how deep of substrate should i use? is there a humidity range(i haven't found one in all the articles i have read)? if i decide to split the tank and get 2, would this cause stress on them? how often should the substrates be changed that are listed above? thank you for your input.
If you opt to split the tank and get two (pacman frogs), I would recommend that you NOT use a clear divider. While they may not be stressed by each others presence, they may be excited by any movement on the other side (especially if they are hungry). I house young pacman (and/or pixie) frogs in sterilite shoe boxes, and when one of them jumps sometimes it sets off a chain reaction. It's pretty funny to watch, but the bins move around a bit so they are hitting the sides pretty hard.
I'll be honest, I don't keep them the recommended way...at least not all the time. There is no soil, peat, sphagnum, etc in their enclosures. I put a little water (dechlorinated, of course) in the bottom, and that is usually it. This allows me to see when they have defecated, and clean it immediately. It's pretty hard to see frog turds in soil, especially when they have their butts dug in, lol. I do put older specimens in soil for about 2 months to let them aestivate.
If you do decide to go for the frogs, be careful not to overfeed them. Pixies are worse than pacmans, but the pacmans have still been known to eat themselves to death. I feed babies 3-6 crickets per week (two feedings. I usually switch to strips of rat pups pretty early...I hate feeding bugs). Once they take whole rat pups, I cut them to 1 weekly feeding, then back them off to every other week as they grow. You can make them grow faster by feeding them more often, but they live longer if you don't.
I know I left the substrate change and humidity questions unanswered, but they are non-issues with the way I keep mine so I can't really comment.
