In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Bad bite! This is what a tegu can do!! (graphic)

This is graphic picture of an adult female tegu. She belongs to a friend of mine, he is also a member here. This girl was bitten while feeding on a rat. It was not done in aggression. Another female thought she had bitten a dead rat, but she had this girl's leg. She made a death roll, thus removing the leg. These tegus were fed for years together with no problems at all. This was a accident, but I am posting this so that people will see what can happen. I would urge you not to feed tegus together. If you have more than one, housing is fine, but feeding them together is not. She was rushed to the vet, he removed the rest of the bone and sewed up the injury. My best wishes go out to the owners of her, I hope she pulls through just fine.

man! that stinks ! i hope she is going to be ok(or as ok as one can be with an injury like that) .

Thanks Mark!! It happen just a few hours ago. I too hope she pulls through!!

I had the same thing happen with my female, my hand and a dead mouse...if she wanted to, a few of my fingers would have been gone and I'm not exagerating......

Nicole, I believe you 100%. Tegus are very strong when it comes to feeding responce. That is why I suggest not hand feeding, or allowing them to associate you with food. Feeding in a separate cage is the best, have the food already there when you put your tegu in it.

She is doing well. Last night was scary because if shock was going to set in it would have happened then. Varnyard & I spent an hour or so on the phone talking so it took my mind off all of the stress for a little bit. Today she went outside for some sun. She laid on a towel on the lawn and when she was warm enough she crawled into in the taller (unmowed grass) where she was shaded.

She ate a mouse, a rodent a good bit smaller than she normally eats, without any issues. See can drink though I have been assisting her a little. I think in time she will be fine as time goes by and if she needs a little extra attention, it doesn't bother me any. She is a huge baby and loves the attention. My main concern for now will be keeping the wound clean and watching for infection.

Thank you for your best wishes, you can follow her story and I will update pictures as she heals.

Rick

Thanks for the update Rick, I hope she continues to improve!! :)

Bobby I usually use tongs or hemos but I was careless and let my guard down...the animal is a good girl and she was extremely confused as to why I was screaming like that...she knew something was wrong but not right away and when she finally let go much of my blood was everywhere...I left the room and threw up from fear...and let me tell you I have never done that before :)
Their jaws are like vices.

I agree, Tegus have a real strong bite. All one needs to do is take one look at the jowls/jaws of a adult tegu male. And you can see the brute strength in the head. If tegus were mean, they would make Nile monitors look like a puppy.

The worst feeding frenzy I have ever witnessed took place at a shop in Fountain Valley.....the employees thought it would be cool to feed a large group of young sub adult Columbian and Argentines that were kept together. The employee threw in a small group of live mice into the enclosure, while horrified onlookers watched the tegu's turn on each other. My daughter was in tears and I have never been back there again.

That's just not right, you should have reported the owners of the shop, or show them what it feels like...heh... And to Rick, I'm glad to hear she's doing better, I wish her a speedy and healthy recovery. -Art-
