I've finally gotten the banner rotation software installed and running, but I've still got some things to learn about it before I feel comfortable. spam_In the meantime, I am going to provide free banner advertising to all that request it, with the intentions of trying to attain the following goals:

(1) spam_Provide a method to pay back those persons whom paid James Thornton for advertising that may not have gotten their money's worth,
(2) spam_Thank you all for sticking with me through the ups and downs of this site over the last month and a half or so,
(3) spam_Give me an opportunity to thoroughly wring out this software to see how robust it is,
(4) spam_Give people whom may be considering advertising here and showing their support for the site a chance to do so without spending their money for a trial run,
(5) spam_Give me some time to play around with the software and ad placement without having people jump on me about moving around their paid for ads.
(6) spam_Give me some idea about how many hits a banner ad can expect to get so I will know how to best set the default settings in the software.

There are a couple of restrictions, however:

(1) spam_Only the following graphics formats will be accepted:

(a) GIF
(b) JPG

(2) spam_Only the following sized ads will be accepted:

(a) 120 x 600
(b) 468 x 60

I cannot do your banner ads for you, so you will be responsible for doing that yourself. spam_Please email your graphic to me as an attachment via my email address here. Also include the URL address you wish this graphic to be pointed to.

I am expecting to continue the free banner ads up to April 30th, 2002, so there is a time limit to this free offer.

I don't know if there is any limit to the number of ads that this software can accept, but if there is, we will all discover that roughly at the same time. spam_<img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

Thank you all for your support and patience.

I am getting a lot of responses for the free banner ad placement, and for the most part I simply put them in place in the rotation schedule and let them fly.

However, some people are not reading the guidelines I posted above. &nbsp;Quite simply, if you send me a graphic that is of the wrong size or type, or neglect to send me the URL for the image so I can put the link to it in the program, I have no other choice but to just ignore your email to me. &nbsp;I just don't have time to send you a reply requesting that this be done. &nbsp;I think my message was fairly explicit about what I need to have provided to me.

If you want your ads run, PLEASE just do as I ask and don't expect me to resize your ad or try to figure out your URL from the clues in your email message. &nbsp; So if you do not see your banner being displayed, please check your email to me and verify that the information you sent was as I have requested.

Thanks.

Ok guys, here is my offer for those that would like repayment. &nbsp;I have already suggested it to Rich via e-mail.

I have submitted an ad for a reptile show near Pittsburgh, PA. &nbsp;Since it's hosted by the Tri-State Reptile Society, I cannot offer money, but I will be able to offer discounted tables to those that can prove that they had paid for advertising on this site. &nbsp;I know it's not much, byu I am in no position to be spending society money, while I also realize that it is my duty to fill a room. &nbsp; There are about 60 tables in the hall, with 32 already spoken for, as in reserved. &nbsp; Some are held, but not reserved. &nbsp;Give me a call at 412-537-7354 to set up reservation arrangements. &nbsp;reserved tables get positioning priority. &nbsp; If you reserve, you're close to the front. &nbsp;Anyway, This is what I have to offer

Thanks all

To date the ad system is handling 46 banners in the two positions and fielded 200,167 impressions over all those banners. &nbsp; So far, without any glitches that I have been able to detect. &nbsp; And the daily numbers are increasing.

So far, the winner of the click counts is HerpCages.com, by a substantial margin.

How does the ad banner mix look to everyone? &nbsp; My philosophy is to have as many advertisers as possible to keep the boredom level down from seeing the same ad over and over again. &nbsp; This also means that if you have an interest when an advertisers banner shows up, you really should click on it NOW, since there is no telling how long it will be before it shows up again for you. &nbsp; So go ahead and take a closer look at them and bookmark the page.

Any feedback from you all?

As you all may remember, the free banner ads will be running out at the end of April. spam_I sincerely hope this puts behind us the drubbing we all got from James Thornton.

Effective May 1, 2002, the banner ads will be offered for a flat fee of $25.00 per 50,000 impresssions ($0.50 per 1,000). spam_This is for either of the two visible ad positions and sizes that you now see. spam_More ads of smaller dimensions may be added in the future, but I have no intention of crowding out the meat of this site by padding in ads in every nook and cranny available.

Payment is due in advance of the ads appearing on this site. spam_At this time, I am prepared to accept payments via PayPal, but will offer others as I find time to set them up.

Please keep in mind that the original intent of setting up banner ads in the previous BOI was to keep this a *free* site for all whom visit and use it. spam_The idea is for people and businesses whom wish to show their support for this site may do so in a graphic way, yet get some additional direct benefit from their money by having their banner ads displayed.

And this brings up another point that needs to be brought up. spam_If you value the use of this site, help me out by convincing the advertisers here that their money was well spent on the advertising. spam_Give them your business whenever possible to show your appreciation for keeping this site free for YOU.

As always, your support is appreciated.

Just to follow the old adage of it not hurting to ask...

Only .gif and .jpg formats allowed? So you wouldn't accept Flash if I also sent you the html for posting it? I don't think you'd have a problem with Ikonboard's compatability (seeing as how it allows us to add Flash to posts) and most banner rotation snippets'll use it. It's just that we have this great Flash banner and it needs a good home... <img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

...(and yes, that's 'Satyrday' as in 'Satyrday Reptiles'<img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>...

The problem isn't with Ikonboard, it's with the AdCycle software. &nbsp;I haven't looked real deeply into the problem, but I believe there is a problem with AdCycle being able to count the impressions and clicks on a Flash banner.

I just bought the Flash development package, so maybe when I've played around with it a bit I'll have some incentive to look into the problem and see how fixable it may be. &nbsp; In the future I will definitely want to be able to accept Flash banners, but for now there is no way to track them.

Well, I guess I could charge per month for the Flash banners if you wanted and ignore the impressions, but that would depend on how important it was to you to have that sort of information available. &nbsp; What I am doing is once a person pays for the banner ads, I am sending them the logon IDs and passwords so they can check their own banner stats. &nbsp; This, of course, would be of no use to you in the case of a monthly billing.

We can discuss it at more length if you want to,and give it a whirl.

OK,

Time is about up for the trial period I offered. &nbsp;Everyone whom has prepaid their advertising is being listed as a Charter Advertiser of this site. &nbsp; They also get a *free* link on the front page in the Featured Sites section as long as their advertising remains current, whereas everyone else will be paying $100 per year for this service.

Time to stop procrastinating before time runs out and you miss out on being among the recognized elite helping to support this site from the beginning.

Thank you to all of you for bearing with me as we went through this trying time.

I thank everyone whom submitted the ads during the free trial period and helped me wring out the banner software to make sure it could hold up under load. &nbsp;I am happy to say that it performed flawlessly.

As of today (May 1), only paid advertisers are now appearing on this site. &nbsp; Please show your gratitude to these people that are helping this to remain a free site by considering them for your purchases in the future.

Thank you all.
