Half way through this book (One Second After) by William R. Forstchen (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0765356864/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1314679001&sr=1-1), and it's a real interesting read. About an EMP (ElectroMagnetic Pulse) attack on the USA and what will (theoretically) happen to the population afterwards.

This is especially interesting after reading accounts such as these:

It is interesting to note that there is speculation that a substantial EMP effect could originate from the Sun. Certainly the results would be the same, regardless of the origin.

There is an attached PDF file to this post that makes for VERY interesting reading.... Especially if you read between the lines...

I recall seeing this on the Discovery channel. It is due to solar flares. There was something about expecting the next greatest possibility in 2012.

Rich! You are secretly working for the media aren't you?? Trying to scare all of us the same way they do:rofl: J/K

On a real note though, I have been hearing about all of this. It will be interesting to see what happens. I guess if it does happen though, I wont be able to see much of anything will I?.....

Read all you can, from as many sources as you can, then try to determine what is possibly the truth, and what is probably misinformation. Assume the government is treating us like mushrooms. The real picture of the world we live in is a huge jigsaw puzzle with pieces hidden like Easter eggs. It is up to us to find those pieces....

Oh I agree Rich. Most definitely! I have heard and talked with others who have been following this EMP talk and it sonds like a real possibility. Something is going to happen to this planet of ours, I just pray it wont be during my children's lives and will leave some survivors.:shrug01:

Most people don't realize just how vulnerable we are to this effect. While the threat of course exists that another country could launch such an attack, in my opinion the threat is low and the potential effects not nearly as wide spread.
The threat of it coming from space though is very real and 100% guaranteed to happen at some point, whether in 2012 or in in the distant future, and whether from the sun or less likely, an intense gamma burst from an exploding star in our galaxy that the earth just happens to be in the path of.
In the mid 1800s there was an abnormally large amount of solar activity which caused the northern lights to be seen well into the lower 48.
This of course happens every so often and always has as the sun cycles, but that was the first time it had happened to that extent after the existence of electrical components.
There are accounts of the telegraph wires sizzling and some telegraph operators being shocked by the equipment. With that being the only technology in existence at the time though, it's was a small thing.
A solar storm of that magnitude today could have extreme consequences. The thing is it will absolutely happen at some point and currently our power grid is completely unprepared for it.

For several years the solar scientists had predicted the next cycle to be possibly the strongest in a hundred years, but now they appear to be divided on the issue since the sun has been late in ramping up the activity towards the peak. In the mean time nothing has been done to prepare the infrastructure for the possibility. Some of the antiquated equipment that would be rendered inoperable would take months to replace, and that's months without power in areas.

Makes you wonder if the casual attitude on the subject is another example of our government's ineptitude, or if it's actually intentional knowing that the chaos that would ensue in the wake of such an event would be an excellent excuse to institute marshal law.
