Most breeders use size/health to determine whether or not the animal is ready to be bred.
Most males should be producing sperm plugs around 450-550 grams. Females should be nice and plump with weights near 1400 grams.
I have an older female that took over 4 years to hit "breeding size" and I have quite a few other females that are breeding as we speak at the age of 18-20 months.
