I use shredded aspen as substrate for my Cape Yorks and regular spotted pythons. I also provide a hide box. Some burrow and some use the hide box. If you are just getting into spotted/childrens pythons you will discover what a cool small snake they are. The golden eyes of a retic with the size of a corn snake. I am sure carefresh will work just fine too. Good luck.

I also use shredded aspen, I've only had mine for about 5-months, but they really are cool snakes. I also provide 2 hide boxes, one on each end of the tank, and a water bowl. Mine loves to burrow, and climb, good luck with the spotteds!!! Linda.

Aspen here as well, along with plenty of hides and branches. Our Childrens and Cape York Spotteds love to climb.

I use "Desert Blend" it’s made from walnut shells and I like it because it’s easy to clean up as it clumps together and dries quickly. Always feed them in a separate container so they don't accidentally swallow any of the substrate which can lead to problems. Also if you have more than one feed them separately. You can see a close-up of the substrate under "Champion" as he comes out of one of his hides.
