It's a very good reproduction of a prehistoric amphibian called Diplocaulus.
It lived during the permian era around 270 million years ago. To bad it still isn't alive today.

Just checked some of my books. (I'm big into prehistoric life) The average size would be around 2 feet. So compared to some of the heavyweights of the time, it was on the puny side.

I found this on a spanish website a long time ago....luckily it was translated in english farther on down, but it does state that it is being used as an example of how easy it is to fake pics.
So, it is conclusively a fake. Hate to burst anyone's bubble. I really wanted it to be real myself, as I LOVE the paranormal and unexplained.
If I can dig up that site again, I'll post it on here for you all.

Ambystoma Spyrna i have a breeding trio 1.3 there great things
The funniest part of that would be that you have a breeding trio of some rare ambystomid, when we can barely breed the common ones.

I had heard this animal was something someone cast out of rubber

Only because no one really tires seriously. I've found various salamander species quite easy to breed if you look into every detail.

Diplocaulus Found
Professor Patrick Schembri, writing in the Sunday Times, reports of a new photo that's been making the email rounds showing a very strange looking animal captured in a bucket. Versions of the email variously claim that the animal was found either at Il-Maghluq in Marsascala, or in Bahrija. Schembri identifies the animal as none other than a Diplocaulus, extinct for 270 million years, which means that the photo almost definitely must be a hoax (either that or it's a major scientific discovery). He writes of the Diplocaulus: "The very distinctive head may have been an adaptation against predators, since the wide head would make Diplocaulus difficult to swallow, or it may have aided the animal to swim by acting as a hydrofoil. Like most other early amphibians, Diplocaulus lived in or near water. It probably fed on insects or fish. It was also considerably larger than the image doing the rounds suggests, since fossils as large as 80 cm in length have been discovered." (via The Anomalist)
