Ceramic Reptile Heaters

When Ceramic Reptile Heaters burn out, do they completely burn out all at once or do they just start producing less and less heat a little bit at a time?

Mine normally have died all at once, but I suppose the other way is possible too. Problem is finding someone who's had them long enough that they actually died and didn't just accidentually drop and break them or something.
