Paper consumption subheadings , toxin, and impaction issues.

(This was a broader based post submitted previously, but it does have value in the reptile world. I am posting it here for any value it may contribute)

There are two streams of thought on this issue :

In animals eating paper:

1) Accidental consumption due to flavored taste (aka paper plates with smeared food)

2). A form of Pica disorder (although Pica can be oriented to eating clay and/or dirt as well.)

This could be subcategorized as well

A). A preference as a supplemental food source.

B) Enrichment due to boredom - the pleasure of chewing with intentional or accidental swallowing that becomes habit forming.

All can lead to impaction and as such should be analyzed and directed. This subject just came up again recently in the Corucia world and that is the reason for pulling up the old post on the subject.

Some of the chemical treatments on paper can also lead to toxic issues as well -especially if in a cumulative effect and over the course of time.

Concerning 2A : Mineral supplements to the diet may need to be addressed such as a lack of iron.

Corucia fall exclusively in Category 1. other animals, such as sheep, horses, dogs, cats, etc. expand to other aspects of the above.

What are your experiences with paper consumption with the animals in your guardianship?
