Light for Nocturnal Observation??
 

I thought field collecting would be the right forum for this.

I have some nocturnal species, both herps, and tarantulas. Some of my T's are particularly sensitive to white light at night.

I wanted to see what people use for observing nocturnal creatures.

The best I have found would be this Multi color LED flashlight

I like it because it has BOTH red and blue lights, along with white.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

One of those red nocturnal heat bulbs...if you don't need the heat, you can just get a low wattage bulb and raise the light fixture.

I definitely don't need a heat bulb. I've had those, and the "moon" bulbs for nocturnal creatures, like lep gex.

No, I need something in flashlight, portable size as I have my T's scattered throughout where I live. Something large would not suit my needs

Buy red cellophane (eg a few folded layers of translucent gift wrap) and hold it over the end of a regular flashlight with a rubber band.

When I was looking for kiwis and tuataras in New Zealand (saw both too!), I used a red LED headlamp that worked pretty good. It was decently bright and it kept my hands free. You can get them for anywhere between $10 for a cheap Walmart brand to a $25 Petzl.

The red cellophane also works well!

I do gear reviews for an outdoor website (www.tacticalgearhead.com) and I'm currently testing a Brownells flashlight (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=4...RSATILE-LIGHTS) that is amazing! It comes with three different colored filters and is tough as nails. It is a little on the expensive side (luckily I get most stuff I review for free), but well worth it in my opinion. I've been using it to do some sea turtle nesting observations by my house and it has not disappointed. The review should be up next week if you are interested.
