"Hypo gene = (co)dominant test breeding" - the next generation (pics)

Hi,

this is just a short update for you, about my Hypo-project.
It is more or less proven, that the Ray-Hine-line-Hypo gene is dominant or co-dominant.

So my goal for this season is to find out if there is a Super form of this morph, what means that those geckos which have both Hypo alleles can be told apart from those with just one copy of the Hypo gene, by looking at the phenotype.

My guess is that the head pattern may be the key.
This is the original Super Hypo female that started it all, bought in 2001 from Ray Hine:

and this is her head pattern:

I hatched about 30 Hypos from:
"Super Hypo x Normal"- and
"Hypo x Normal"-crosses

But all of them had black spots on their heads. This is a holdback female from last season:

As you can see, she has spots on her body as well. But that is not the case with all Hypo hatchlings. Some have no spots on body, just on head and tail.
This is what the females head looks like. As you can see: black spots (she is by the way one of those Hypos I hatched out, with the most reduced black spotting on head...but it is still black!):

So this year I'm doing:
"Hypo x Hypo"- and "Super Hypox Hypo"-crosses.

The "Super Hypo" I breed to a Hypo this year, is the female I bought in 2001. Most of those 30 Hypo hatchlings were hers. I bred her to a wild caught male the last years. Of corse it is a small number compared to the number of peas that Mendel used...but I think one can be relatively sure that she is the Super form.

This little cutie is the first male that hatched from "Super Hypo x Hypo"-cross:

He already has his first sheds...and untill now he only shows few spots on head:

I hope that he is the Super form. I cannot be sure yet...but a few sheds more, and we will know more.

I will post update pics of him.
I hope to hatch out some more babies soon. I got more than 90 eggs untill now but just got 4 babies...males needed nearly two mounth to hatch...a crazy season.

I'd like to hear your opinion on my project.

Thank you very much for our interest,
Greetings from Germany, Johannes Knierer

PS: Another interesting notice I made: The orange on tail seems to be dominant as well. I would not call my Super Hypo female a carrottail...her tail is just orange but not as intensive as what i would call a carrottail. But this orange on the tail shows up on some tails of her babies as well.

You have some very lovely Leos there
I am not very educated in genetic but I hope that this proves out the way that you are hoping for

Maybe the ones with no body spotting are the super form. The head spots may or may not play into that. Of all the hypos you produced, did any of them have a clean body regaurdless of how the head looked? I have a feeling that the highly reduced body spots would be the het form. If you did have some with a totally clean body, that would shoot that out of the water..LOL. Based on what I've just said, my hunch is that baby is a het.

No...that's not possible, because I produced Hypos without spots on body from "Super Hypo x Wild caught"-pairing.
This female for example. I hatched her out in 2003. I would have used pics of her in the first post...but she is gravid..so I thought it would be better not to disturb her...but well I need pics of her now so she has to lay her eggs later :)

I bred her last season to a Normal male and got 50% Normal- and 50% Hypobabies. So she is definately the "het"-form.

But all those Geckos that turned out spotless on body later, had spots first which fade later.
But you should be right if you say that the Super form has no spots on body.
So those spots on the babies' body have to fade ;)

I have not input other than asking to keep us posted as to the results.

yes, please keep us updated!!!
i've paired my normal with an hybino forom Ray Hine, to do the same kind of test. only on a somewhat smaller scale ...haha

I just want to show you two other "project geckos" I hatched out.
The jungle is the result of a "Hypo x Patternless"-breeding and the other one is from "Hypo x Hypo"-breeding. I'm not realy sure what both are. Both were incubated for female the first mounth of incubation and after one month I put the eggs in the male incubator. Both hatched completely white, what is unusual for Hypos. Both had their second shed and now starting to develop some yellow. I'm not even sure if they are Hypos.Maybe they were just a bit prematured when they hatched and had not developed all the melanin.
Either way,I like them both:

Two years ago I wanted to outcross our Redstripes and throw more carrot tail into our SHTCTBs and made a bunch of hets. We picked the best looking superhypos from those. So far we've come up with just banded superhypos (about 20 hatched), no stripes - that's from SHTCT "het stripe" to "het stripe". We have about 30 more to hatch but some stripes should have appeared by now. That's pretty dominant alright.

Thx Dan. That's pretty interesting.
How do the tails of those banded Superhypos look like? Did the nice carrottail of the redstripes pass to them?

Thx, Johannes

They're still young, Johannes but nothing to write home about yet. Some of the Redstripes hatch with 30% carrot tail - these superhypos don't show too much so far. What's odd is that our RWs had like zero carrot tail and with one shot of Redstripe they got a good amount in the first het to het offspring. The last pic is a (Redstripe x RW with very little carrot) - she got good carrot. ???
