got a question?

how can you tell how old a leopard gecko is??? :shrug01:

ask its mother.

Short of getting a hatch date from the breeder, buying it young (and keeping track), or getting a good history when you purchase an older one, it is largely guesswork. I'm sure some people are better at this than others, but I have looked closely at a 4 year old and an 11 year old and not seen significant differences.

If you can still see the original banding on it that has not yet broken up into the spots, or other pattern, you can guess it is around a year or less, but once it hits full size, you can't tell. If it is female you can see how many eggs she lays this year as compared to last year. If it is a larger amount, chances are she is younger and reaching towards her prime years, if the amount is declining, then she is getting older and egg production is decreasing. That is the only way I can think.
Mine seem to get fatter and lazier too....as they age.

LOL, thank goodness no one answered with "Count the rings in their tail." Someone actually told me that the pet store they bought their gecko from told her that they tell how old all of their leopard geckos are that way....

I thought that was common knowledge, Sam
