Not a bad day

I had the day off today and decided to drive to Titusville, FL to do a little herping in some FL scrub habitat.
I hadn't been walking long when I saw guy taking off into the brush....this photo is as close as I could get.

I was suprised to find this beautiful corn sitting out on the path sunning itself.

Not a herp but still pretty cool...I saw this young armadillo watching me through the brush...

I found this subadult yellow ratsnake coiled under a rotten log. He was more orange than I usually see in central FL...especially in the head.
Elaphe obsoleta quadrivittata:

I also saw plenty of green anoles, scrub lizards and gopher tortoise burrows. I was hoping to see an indigo but I'm not complaining. Anytime you can walk in the woods in February and see snakes...it's a good day.

Coluber constrictor priapus

I'm not much into racers but I've read a little mythology, and I have to say that Priapus is a pretty funny name for a snake. Who came up with that and why?

:uhh:

Cool pics by the way! And I'm jealous that you can go herping in February.

Ah yes....Priapus, the God of Fertility w/ the enormous phallus.
I'm thinking they must have been named for the way they cruise around with their head sticking straight up in the air like they're on viagra :D

great day herping

Chris:

I live over in Brandon near Tampa on the west coast. I went herping myself last weekend. Did not have the great day you did but I did find 3 baby armadillos. Next time I will have to remember to take my camera.
