The 75-year-old man's caretaker told authorities she had arrived at his home and was greeted by a cottonmouth, a large water moccasin, lying near the front door, reports The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

The man, Garrett Bauernschmidt, of west Volusia County, got his handgun to shoot the snake but accidentally shot himself in the hand,

authorities said.

The venomous snake got away.
