That's ridiculous. OF COURSE they want to eliminate these so-called "American traditions"! To quote so many vegs before me: "How can you love an animal called a pet and eat an animal called dinner?" The point is, there's no such thing as a meat-eating environmentalist or meat-eating animal-lover, and most of the people who run these organizations (HSUS, PETA, etc.) are both.
2.) Insulin, though tradionally extracted from pig pancreas, can now be synthesized in a lab using a strain of bacteria found in the human gut...LacZ60? Something like that.
