South Padre Sea Turtles Bask Under Heat Lamps

(January 21, 2007)--Three dozen sea turtles are getting a little tropical vacation under heat lamps at South Padre Island.

The juvenile green turtles were rescued from the arctic that caused the water temperature in an arm of the Gulf of Mexico to plummet 18 degrees in 48 hours.

Sea Turtle Incorporated curator Jeff George expects more of the reptiles will be found and need help.

The rescued, cold-blooded juvenile turtles have been scrubbed clean of grime, then put under a heat lamp.

Sea Turtle Incorporated has a 500-square foot indoor area crammed with temporary holding tanks and plastic bins holding the turtles in warmer water.

Other turtles were being taken to the University of Texas-Pan-American Coastal Studies Lab on the other end of South Padre Island.
