Prognosis Good: Tortoise Recovers After $4K Surgery to Cracked Shell

A tortoise that cracked its shell after falling off a 10-foot wall in Fallbrook is recovering after vets used screws, zip ties and denture material to repair it.
San Diego County Animal Services says the 70-pound tortoise was trying to escape a dog when it fell from a 10-foot wall in Fallbrook. He landed on his back and his shell cracked in three places.
Vets used zip ties, screws and wire to hold the broken shell together.
It may take a year for the shell to heal, but doctors say the 30- to 40-year-old tortoise's prognosis is good.
