When I was looking for kiwis and tuataras in New Zealand (saw both too!), I used a red LED headlamp that worked pretty good. It was decently bright and it kept my hands free. You can get them for anywhere between $10 for a cheap Walmart brand to a $25 Petzl.

The red cellophane also works well!
