As for that "evolved fear of snakes", there could be something to that. And not just with humans. Whenever I have a critter harassing the bird feeders, I found that if hollering, and clapping my hands doesn't do the trick of scaring them away, making a hissing sound will usually do the trick and send them scampering away. It seems to be a sound that animals just pay attention to more than most others.
