KENDALL, Fla. -- A 20-year bite-free streak came to a painful end today when a cotton mouth water moccasin latched onto a man who makes his living working with snakes.
The 48-year-old owner of Zoological Imports was rushed to Kendall Regional Medical Center after the water moccasin sank its fangs into him. The snake is one of the most venomous in Florida.
The handler says he was trying to bag the reptile when it bit him on the hand, which quickly started to swell.
"That snake can actually kill somebody," said Al Cruz of Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue.
The victim was given some antivenin and is expected to recover.
Cruz warned that snakebites are most common this time of year, so you are advised to be careful around high-grass areas.
