Have no idea about where you live. But around where I live I just go into the woods, start flipping rocks and logs and I usually find them hanging out in the leaf litter. They are very quick. As soon as you flip whatever they are under they will try and dart down into their little burrows.

Also have a pond that herds of them come to mate in.

So maybe find a pond during their mating season. They seem to prefer ponds with shallow water.

I actually have 6 babies from a clump of eggs I hatched out last year. Cute little guys. I had no idea they hatched out brown. Turned black when they morph and take a few weeks to actually develop their yellow spots. They quickly learned to eat blood worms and black worms offered on a toothpick. Sorry to go on but I love my spotted salamanders!
