I have found that they thrive best when planted in true composted peat moss; not the dollar a bag stuff from the discount garden center labeled peat, but rather the good stuff. You may need to do a lot of searching of grower suppliers to find a good brand. I used to use European Peat for growing most carnivorous plants but with the rising costs of petroleum/shipping it is no longer cost effective.
