It's been quite sometime since I've bothered much with internet posts regarding herps. I've never cared for the egos or blatant attempts to boost a person's business or reputation commonly seen on the internet. In the world of tree boas this is more true than many other areas of our collective hobby.
I recently decided to add a large female Emerald Tree boa to my herp room. In searching for one I only came across small animals. After about a month of looking I came across a seller I had never done business with before, Wall to Wall Reptiles run by a Harlin Wall. I had heard the name somewhere years back but not with any details.
While I have always taken the internet with a spoon full of salt, the first place I thought of coming to check up on this seller was here, the old BOI.
By checking here I found that Harlin had a pretty good rep for selling animals.
So I contacted him and purchased a large female ETB.
Prior to the purchase he sent me detailed photos of the animal and any visible defects (injuries/scars) he could see. The animal had a wound that was nearly 90% healed I could see and to me was not an issue. I would have been upset if I had not been told about it prior to buying it however since I would have found it when it arrived. Harlin was very up front with what he was selling.
When the animal arrived and was removed from the shipping bag I was drawn to some fresh blood on it's lips. In checking the gums I found that it had sustained a fresh injury. It appeared to have caught a tooth on the cloth bag during shipping. Not something you want to see with a new animal. I didn't find a broken tooth in the bag and the gums while swollen to twice the size of the other side still looked to be treatable (I have been working with tree boas for 20 years, if you are a novice you don't want to be treating a swollen gum on a tree boa-send it back).
I contacted Harlin and explained the issue. I was pleasantly surprised how easy he was to work with. He pointed out there is a 7 day complete health guarantee on the animal and that I can send it back. Shipping wasn't an issue as he'd refund that too. I explained I'm willing to keep it for the seven days and treat it, we discussed different methods to do that. When day 7 rolled around the gums had gone down quite a bit but the animal had gone into a shed. I explained I'd be more comfortable keeping her if I could get it to eat but the shed has put that on hold.
Harlin was comfortable enough with all of this to where he in writing simply extended the health guarantee another 7 days. Quite cool of him and something I nearly have never seen in the hobby.
As of recently, the animal completed it's shed and downed a fair size food item.
I'll be looking to pick up another from him towards the end of this year. Solid guy to do business with. Since it was here on the BOI I found the info I needed about if I can purchase from this person I felt it was only right to post here so that others can also benefit.
Thanks Fauna.
Keep up the good work Harlin.
