Mermaids are fake? Can you prove that?

Lol, I probably came off a little harsh, sorry folks. I just remember there was a HUGE backlash about that 'documentary' in the scientific community because the public began swamping marine biologists and other professionals with ridiculous questions. The 'documentary' did not have a disclaimer that said the material was fabricated. It's basically the "War of the Worlds" of this century, and it was actually pretty depressing how many people believed in it, and then thought that scientists rejecting the fallacy was a huge cover up/conspiracy theory. *le sigh*

This was such a huge problem, in fact, that NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) had to make a formal statement dismissing the existence of mermaids. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/mermaids.html

Aaaand this was discussed on Discovery.com: http://news.discovery.com/history/no...ids-120629.htm

The funny thing about science is that I don't have to prove something is fake, you have to prove something is real. :-)

I think it was meant to be a believable mockumentary so it would go viral. I can only imagine what kind of crazies came out of the woodwork.

I prefer to think that most herp enthusiasts embrace science and grasp scientific reasoning.

You'd be surprised how many don't... I've raised quite a few hackles from people who don't want to believe the scientific facts I use to justify my arguments, even when they can't back up their beliefs with similar scientific facts. Perhaps I'm too Vulcan for people's tastes... it's all about logic, lol.

Oh like Politics! lol. I have a niece who really thought this was true. Her hatred for Obama also had her believing he was doing a cover up on mermaids, lol. She has a twin sister who is 100% liberal and she is 100% teaparty. It is funny as hell at reunions and stuff.

Then there was also disclaimers on Animal Planet for the second show. Also in the advertisement for the second show.

Aaah, missed that, thanks Dennis. Still, gotta love how they're vague about which portions of the show are false (like the subject of the show itself). They got a HUGE pushback from the first showing, so it doesn't surprise me that they had to be a little more forthcoming with subsequent releases.
