Federal Exotic Animal Ban - Bill HR669

I was checking the number of threads on this subject and this thread doesn't come up in search in relation to the Bill number. Might as well add it for others looking to rant.

Funny how the gov't works- 4 of the people on that list are non-voting members from outlying territories, including the nutjob from Guam who introduced the bill! This bill may make SOME sort of sense for states like FL and LA, where these reptiles could theoretically survive, but how long do you think a Python would last in Michigan? Let it be a state decision, or even by county or township as it is now- there's absolutely no need for a nationwide ban, and you'd think they'd have bigger things to worry about right now.

exactly, its retarded. i think that, at the most, in states where there are swamps, and things like hurricanes, and stupidity, if you plan on getting a snake that gets larger than 4-5 feet, then you should have to take a test, basically like getting a drivers license. this would make that old 'i didnt know how big it was gonna get' excuse null and void. and then just microchip the snakes so if there is one let loose, or through natural disaster, escapes, they can 1.) return it to the owner, or 2.) rehome the snake, and fine the idiot, revoke their 'reptile' license. then that way, there isnt a nationwide ban that destroys this huge industry, and it promotes knowledge before LEGAL gain. of course there will be idiots who will give away their snakes, and its not a cure-all idea, but its better than this bullshit that has everyone worried.

Florida ALREADY has such a permit needed for "Reptiles of Concern" (primarily giant snakes). But I guess Big Brother Congress feels that the individual states are totally incompetent to pass their own legislation to control that which needs control regionally or locally. Much better to cause unemployment, bankruptcies, and unnecessary loss of freedom across THE WHOLE U.S., instead of just where it might possibly be a problem. I sure would hate to see children and puppies at risk from giant pythons in Alaska, Montana, and MOST of the rest of the U.S., lol!

Your tax dollars at work!! Really makes you happy to pay Uncle Sam this month, doesn't it? Of course, if you go bankrupt, I guess you won't have to pay any taxes!

It does seem rather odd that there are so many people on that committee that not only have no vested interest in what happens in mainland USA, but also no constituent base that would be affected by their decision. Maybe I've been living in the woods for far too long, but since when did Samoa, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Mariana Islands get representation in Congress to vote on issues that concern ME as a United States citizen? What's next? Have representatives from the Mexican illegal alien population voting on issues as well?

Maybe the humaniacs figured out that the best way to advance their agenda is to find sympathetic bureaucrats / politicians who are not worried about votes on the mainland of the US? They are quite politically savvy - they may have found the Achilles's heal of our (supposedly) representative system. Just find politicians who have no stake in what most of us care about, because their voters don't live here, anyway.
