Thieves swipe rare snake from pet store

Clinton Township police are searching for the thief who broke into a local pet store and stole an expensive boa constrictor, but left behind the cash register.

Someone smashed the glass door into Great Lake Reptiles on Groesbeck Highway near 14 Mile Road late Tuesday or early Wednesday and made off with a relatively rare albino boa constrictor worth about $3,000.

But the culprits also caused havoc in the shop -- which sells snakes, frogs, geckos, turtles and other creatures -- by letting tarantulas out of their containers, leaving the scary-looking spiders crawling around.

"Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing," said shop owner Ryan DiForti. "It must have been someone who knew how much (the boa) was worth. They didn't even bother to mess with the cash register."

Also taken was a baby yellow anaconda worth about $100. Two iguanas, each worth about $500, were let out of their containers and died from exposure. A white cockatoo that costs $1,500 was found in its cage near the door and investigators suspect the thief either accidentally left it behind or couldn't carry it outside.

The thief smashed a glass door entrance to get inside the shop, but left behind a clawhammer and a flashlight that had been used to smash a display case, according to a police report.

Detective Lt. Marc Rybinski said the store owner provided names of potential suspects, but so far the creatures have not yet been recovered.

DiForti, 23, a graduate of Warren Woods Tower High School, said the boa constrictor is about 4 feet in length and is ready to breed. Its bite is not deadly but it could squeeze a cat or baby to death.

"It's such an expensive snake, there are only about 20 in Michigan that are raised by private breeders. I'd really like to get it back, I hand-picked it myself because I loved the color," DiForti said.

DiForti said his insurance doesn't cover the reptiles and he may also have to pay the cost of replacing the glass door, which is about $350. He is offering a $500 reward for the return of the boa constrictor.

"I'll take it back no questions asked," he said.

Anyone with information on the snake theft is asked to call police at (586) 493-7802.

Too many things to poke fun at in that article, so I'll just comment on the fact that people suck & I'm glad nobody around here knows what I have.

I hear you Harald. Very few people around me know exactly what I have. I don't even have everything I keep on my website. There's been too many instances of theft to allow yourself to be very trusting when it comes to strangers.
I don't allow people I don't know to come to the house to buy anything either. If they live within driving distance I meet them somewhere.

I am getting so sick of this kind of S if the pet store guy actually said that as part of his comments of his own free will, then with that kind of "mentality" he has no business owning a pet store. If it was a comment on a question the reporter asked, he should have said that it has no relevance to the story, and is just sensationalistic garbage. If the reporter just tacked it on himself, then he should be fired and admonished for adding his own biased "facts" to a story.

That has the definite ring of media...probably something along the line of: "So, just how dangerous is this snake?...I see, so could it kill me?...a small child?..what about a dog?

hey HH i see you live in NY...Can you post a list of all your animals with how much thier worth so that if i ever cruise through your neighborhood around two am i will know exactly which ones to take and how much to sell them for???.... Seriously... I think the pet store owner added a little flare to the story to make it headline news to get the word out about his missing snake in the hopes of getting some info back on it.

Would you like me to be as generous with my estimates as that shop owner?? $3000 for a 4ft albino boa, and 2 iguanas worth $500 each...roflmao. I'll leave off the price tags for the time being. My list starts with my security system:
1.0 Presa Canario 160 lbs
1.0 lab/pit/chow mix 80 lbs
1.0 pit 75 lbs
Before I bought this house, I had only the first 2 dogs...but I had a 5+ft western diamondback rattlesnake under my bedroom window. He did a pretty good job of scaring off a would be intruder, lol. The dirtbag didn't even bother to close the window (or maybe it was the screen, I don't remember specifically).

maybe they were the gold lined iguanas!!! hey he needs to boost the proice of the iguanas so the insurance for the iggys will cover the cost of the smashed door.

Reminds me of an article I read years ago, I think it was in Tattoo magazine.
This fellow owned a tattoo shop and it was robbed, the equipment stolen.
The fellow then designed a cage to hang over the window where the thief entered. In the cage was a diamondback, and the bottom of the cage was basically a trap door hooked to the window by a wire.
He came into work one morning and the window was open, the diamondback loose on the floor. Nothing was missing and he had no trouble after that.

I always imagined the thief putting his head in the window and a large rattler dropping down around his neck

I right there with you Harald! I have a 125lb Great Pyrrennes that free ranges in my yard. He is quite intimidating to say the least. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can make it anywhere near my house without him letting me know.

But, let's say that you happen to actually make it past him and enter the house. I have 90lbs worth of Dobe that will happily escort you to the nearest ambulance. It's funny, Rocky (my Dobe) actually sleeps in with my snakes. It has worked out nicely as when one has actually escaped from my Boaphiles, Rocky will let me know by either barking or coming up and getting me or the wife.

While the end result may not be as effective as a Diamondback, it certainly is a nice deterrant.
