My wife and I are California people and I'm a bit worried about the humidity I keep hearing about. Are the summers THAT bad?
Well i have lived in both places i currently live close to Houston and yes the summers can be brutal . The heat index can reach 110 plus.

The temp reaches 110-114 here in Sacramento, but the humidity isn't an issue.

It's the "wet"heat that really makes a difference .I really like it here better and as far as the indigos as a rule of thumb the state doesn't really care what snakes you have as long as they are not native then it's permits and regulations .

To play it safe...

I would buy them after you get to Texas so that your Federal Permit has your Texas address on it. This would be better documentation than bringing them into the state with an expired out of state address. Not that anyone would be asking anyway.

Tim, here in California I don't think I'd need a permit in the first place. And from what I understand, I won't need a permit in Texas either, since they aren't native to Texas?

I was

under the impression that because they are Federally protected you would need a permit to bring them across state lines? I know that a permit is required if you buy them out of state but not within the state. Maybe this is a good time for Steve Tanaka to jump in? Bottom line is, Texas Parks & Wildlife will not be able to identify an Eastern from a Texas Indigo! At least have some documentation from the breeder.

Wink "Interstate Commerce Permit"

The Federal Permit is an {{{Interstate Commerce Permit}}}. Which means that it is for the sale, trade, or barter of an eastern indigo, across state lines, between two people who live in different states. The Federal Government does not regulate transport. It regulates interstate commerce. And once you own your indiogo, or indigos, you can transport them to, or move them with you to any state where they are legal. I got the straight poop on that from the Federal office in Atlanta. I was going to move to Mississippi, and I got a letter from the Feds stating such. The only hang up was the state government in Mississippi. The Federal Government does not regulate transport of eastern indigos. Period.

Yep!

Tony is correct,

No interstate commerce transport permit is required to transport D. couperiacross state lines, once you have such in your possession.
There are several folks in Texas with Drymarchon, though only a few have managed to acquire permits for and keep D. m erebennus, but Texas regulations do not cover D. couperi.
Hope Dean doesn't get upset about me posting this without his permission, but below you will find a photo indicating the labial scalation differences between D. m erebennus and D. couperi...

Best regards,

Jeff

obtaining a license for an Eastern Indigo for the state of Texas

A friend of mine bought his Eastern Indigo about 8 years ago in California and it was captive-bred, but he lost all of the information and the name of the breeder.
He wanted to give the snake to me and I live in Texas, is there anyway I can get a license or permit without the breeder information? Also the snake is currently located in Texas.

Thanks Ashley

You should be able to apply for the permit and your friend in California would be considered the seller on the permit when you apply. Roughly $100 and a pretty good wait time (its definitely not an overnight or one week thing). You must have that permit for an eastern to cross state lines when going from one owner to another.
