I think I missed this one....

My boy still ain't figured out that it goes "inside", so I think we may have missed the timing on this one. He's been courting like you wouldn't believe, leaving his "stuff' all over the outside of the girls, but I haven't witnessed any actual copulation. Problem is, looks like MJ might have just ovulated. It's a bit large for a pre-ovulation swell, but I could be wrong. This will be the first season this girl has seen a male, so I am still learning her habits, etc.

Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens. He's still busy, so I'll leave them be for some more. Maybe I'll get lucky. Sure is a good thing I didn't get into this for the money though. LOL

Aurora MAY be swelling a bit, but hasn't ovulated yet, so we still got some time on getting my Sunglow made.

I've had Boa Constrictor for more than thirty years. But breeding just never really entered my mind. I was happy just owning them. When I paid just over 3K for Aurora in '99 from Pete Kahl, and started looking into other mutations, the cost of some of them just floored me. I saved for almost 4 years to get Aurora as it was.

Then I started learning about the genetics and my curiosity kicked in. Combine that with the saving for years factor, and breeding was a logical choice. I can breed for what I want, and use some of the offspring for trades into other genetic mutations that I admire, or caging, or sell a couple to help finance the food situation, put some away for vet costs, etc. It takes some of the burden from my wallet, but, is not a reliable source of income. Plus I am learning an aspect of Boa that I just never really looked at before.

Also, some people try a proved method for breeding, and are unsuccessful. Why? Others try something a little different that works for Jimbo, but not for Fred. Again, WHY? Some cool, others don't, some introduce late in the fall season, while others have success introducing in the beginning of summer, some reduce food intake, others don't. WHY? Is it due to individuality? Geographical location? A combination of both? Something altogether different? These are the little things I mean by this being a learning lesson for me.

Anyway, I have as a meager start.....

0.1 Albino F3 to WC (my beggining)
1.1 Albino F4 to WC (offspring from 1st litter)
1.0 Harding Honduran F1 to WC
0.1 Harding Honduran F3 to WC
1.0 F1 Leubking Salmon DH
1.0 Anery Colombian poss het snow
0.1 Hog Island (my latest rescue)
0.1 Normal BCI
0.0.35 unknown yet

I guess you could say money helps, but is not the primary reason I started breeding, and I do not count on it paying my bills. I am a surveyor by trade, and will probably do that till I die. I just don't know any better. My reasoning may be a little whacked to some, but it is what it is. Hope that helps paint a better picture for you though.

I understand what you mean about the breeding. Last year my collection moved from a room in the house ( affected greatly by outside temps ) to a building of their own. Even with the walls unfinished it holds temps better than the house does. I was using Neos last year and using Visions this year. Nothing that spurred breeding last year is working this year , go figure.

I think one of the reasons a good bit advice given by others for breeding doesn't work for everybody is the factors at play.

geographic location
insulation factor of the house or building they're kept in
cage set up
ambient room temps , etc

No set up is the exact same. If you get advice from Ronne or Kahl themselves , without knowing their set ups , the advice may or may not work for that person. Ihle said it best in his video , " I know how my building works and I have it set up to work around that " , or something to that effect. Without having all the variables some advice turns into a wasted season.

A guy that never drops his temps but has enough of a draft to effect the room , may not even think of the draft or the effects it has / could have on his collection and may not even think to mention it. Even someone that keeps their critters in the basement may be off a tad on his ambients. I've used 3 different brands of digital thermometers , between the 3 , 2 were within 4 degrees of each of each other , the 3rd was up to 10 degrees different.

Still waiting to see what the 0.0.35 unknowns are. If you'd be so kind to ask them to speed up the process it'd be great.

Exactly Bryon. I've even read one story where the guy did exactly the same for two females, one took, the other didn't even ovulate. The only difference was the type of cages they were in. Was this the factor that caused a miss for the season? Or something else?

What can I say, I'm weird, and things like this peak my interests. But I bet down the road a ways, I'll have a lot of those questions answered.

the boa seen can be a bit of bs at times and coming here is well worth it.

Thanks. They're great critters. I wish I would have gotten some of these Central Am boas sooner. They're pretty neato. Quite a bit of difference in personality from the Colombians I've always kept.

You expecting anything this season? You have some mighty nice critters yourself.

I do have the male motley in with two girls(rotation wise) a hypo het albino 4 years old and a 3year old motley het..just giving him ataste of glory( yea glory is a good term.)but he is only 16 months but.. I did get him up to 4' its out of my hands now..can only hope!..I can get you a picture if you like.
