As such, I strongly urge registrants to avoid using a VPN service to register, as they are often used by spammers and scammers, and as such will be blocked when discovered when auditing new registrations.
Sorry about all these hoops to jump through, but I am quite serious about blocking spammers and scammers at the gate on this site and am doing the very best that I can to that effect. Trust me, I would rather be doing more interesting things with my time, and wouldn't be making this effort if I didn't think it was worthwhile.

Alfalfa for Prairie Dogs
I just got to fantastic babies from melonie. I can't figure out why they shouldn't eat alfalfa. I have read numerous reports of prairie dogs clearing out alfalfa fields, yet everything I read tell me no alfalfa.
Can anyone tell me why?

It might be too high in protein for them. I know alfalfa hay is considered a higher protein hay. Other than that, beats me. You might have better luck contacting a breeder or prairie dog group. (I know nothing about 'em except they're fun to watch.)

Alfalfa
I know that this post is old, but I thought the question may come up again with other pd owners. Alfalfa is too rich and fattening, and straw hay has little nutritional value. Timothy, orchard, oat and brome hay are good choices. Try to give your prairie dog some variety for the best nutritional gain, and to keep them from getting bored with it. There are a few commercial prairie dog foods on the market, too. Oxbow Prairie Delight is a good choice. Oxbow's Bunny Basics - T (timothy based) is also a food for them. Both foods are timothy based. Stay away from foods that are alfalfa or corn based. I've set to autoreply so I can try and keep up with your questions.
