Bed a Beast?

ok
well

ive been home sick all week because i had
my tonsils taken out monday
and of coarse being home with nothing to do
but post on sites and read endless hours
about reptiles gives u nothing but ideas,
so today i re-did my entire Huge crested cage with a mix of
Bed-a-beast and Cork bark.

now the reason im upset with myself is because
latly my females have been digging alot
and just looking egg ready. So was it a mistake to
cover the entire VIvarium with potential egg laying spots
instead of just keeping my very large egg box a
possibility for these girls?

should i redo this cage again and take out the bed a beast.
also i did it to help raise the humidity because it is in fact a
all screen cage, but its heavily planted with real plants
and it has a shallow water dish and a Continuous drip system
as u can see i was really board over my week off
so i tricked out the cage emensly

anyway thanks for your help
marco

You should be fine...

You should be fine, as long as you are diligent about checking for eggs in the substrate. My substrate in my female's cage is coco-fibre, which I believe that the bed-a-beast is. I have a scale, so it's easy for me to check to see if her weight drops by a few grams in a night. I have been lucky so far, in that I have always been able to see my female sitting in the hole laying, as she tends to do it during the day, or in the early evening.

How thick is the substrate? I have the most success when I put in about 6 inches of substrate, and I have a small heat pad that is on low on a dimmer under part of the cage, just in case she desires a warmer area to lay in. I am not by any means saying that you need to have a heat pad, as it is probably warmer where you are than where I am in Canada.

It takes more work to use substrate everywhere instead of paper towel, but I think it looks nicer, and is far more natural than paper towel, but that's just my humble opinion.

I hope this helps, any more questions, fire away!

for me, it's a lot easier to keep paper towel with a nest box in there...it's up to you....but I have a lot of animals to care for and this well helps and they're thriving well...
I haven't gotten a live plant for a cage ever since I did once years ago and crickets really messed it up...I was very annoyed and my animals do well withouth them...my cresteds are all in plastic or glass tanks though
