Reptile owners, please read this and comment!

This is a conversation i just had with another reptile owner that jumped in and randomly attacked me on a public forum because i encouraged another keeper to learn more about other less common species of snakes. Please read and reply. All of your comments good and bad are appreciated. If i said something out of line, then by all means i will apologize publicly. I think this is a brutal attack from an arrogent and ignorant reptile keeper that THOUGHT i was saying "my snakes are better than your snakes". I've been in this hobby for years, and I encourage people to get as MUCH knowledge as they can about all species big and small. Enjoy.

James

(16:04:11) eunectes904: my blue ate another rat today
(16:04:21) eunectes904: i've been stuffin food in him almost every day it seems
(16:04:29) eunectes904: i'm gonna have to post a growth thread here pretty soon
(16:04:33) eunectes904: he'll be a year old in feb.
(16:04:41) Southern_Boa_Gur: yeah you should have one here
(16:04:48) Southern_Boa_Gur: i know i'd love to see it
(16:04:55) Southern_Boa_Gur: and there are a few others on here that like blue's too
(16:05:11) eunectes904: coo
(16:05:22) eunectes904: yeah i got him out today to hand over to troy so i could clean him, but he didn't really want to come out
(16:05:36) eunectes904: so I held him and cleaned him at the same time. I Just kinda wrap him all around my hand and arm
(16:11:56) Southern_Boa_Gur: lol yeah i know what you mean
(16:27:35) eunectes904: so what are everyone's plans for today
(16:28:12) eunectes904: well, I get a lot of that here with the boa/python lovers that used to come visit alexander
(16:29:36) eunectes904: troy's really cool, i can't wait to get him into working with some of these larger more "advanced" species of snakes
(16:30:40) Donnie_K: mother[bleep]er, troys straight, get over it
(16:30:50) eunectes904: ?????
(16:30:58) Donnie_K: what the hell, how you gonna say something like that? troy keeps burms and retics...
(16:31:07) eunectes904: that was random
(16:31:09) Donnie_K: and you're gonna go and say "these larger, more advanced species of snakes"
(16:31:22) eunectes904: i meant the species themselves donnie
(16:31:24) Donnie_K: yeah, it was... somehow you end up on my nerves a lot
(16:31:47) eunectes904: like ptyas, spilotes and pseutses
(16:31:50) eunectes904: things not everyone keeps in the house
(16:31:54) Donnie_K: I keep burms and retics
(16:32:06) Donnie_K: and I'm offended that you talk down to them saying what you keep is more advanced
(16:32:47) Donnie_K: I respect anyone that deals with cribos and things like that regularly... but don't talk down to people who own snakes that can eat you because of it
(16:32:52) eunectes904: i didn't say burms and retics arne't advanced. but there's lots of great info out there on the care
(16:32:58) eunectes904: and i don't talk down donnie you know that
(16:33:02) eunectes904: i like burms and retics too
(16:33:20) Donnie_K: ok, let me copy and paste before it gets bumped off the screen
(16:33:33) Donnie_K: (16:29:36) eunectes904: troy's really cool, i can't wait to get him into working with some of these larger more "advanced" species of snakes
(16:33:36) Donnie_K: now
(16:33:40) Donnie_K: what does troy keep?
(16:33:46) eunectes904: what's wrong with that statement?
(16:33:49) Donnie_K: same thing I do, right?
(16:33:53) Donnie_K: so by implication
(16:34:05) Donnie_K: you're saying what you keep is "more "advanced""
(16:34:11) Donnie_K: aren't you?
(16:34:21) Donnie_K: or are you gonna say you worded it incorrectly?
(16:34:31) Donnie_K: cuz you do that an awful lot
(16:34:36) eunectes904: i'm not sure how else to word it.
(16:35:02) Donnie_K: so it was meant as it was worded
(16:35:03) eunectes904: some of the species that aren't AS popular have various degrees of care. Like ptyas for example
(16:35:13) Donnie_K: that what you keep is more advanced than what troy keeps
(16:35:16) Donnie_K: which is what I keep
(16:35:29) Donnie_K: you didn't say less popular... you said more advanced
(16:36:20) eunectes904: well, as far as care handling and understandig goes, yes some of them are for more advanced keepers
(16:36:31) eunectes904: i'm not really sure how else to word it
(16:36:43) eunectes904: it doesnt mean that keeping big snakes is any LESS of a job
(16:36:50) Donnie_K: seriously? you really got watch and make sure your cribo doesn't kill and eat you?
(16:37:00) Donnie_K: well that's how it sounded to me, and I am offended
(16:37:08) eunectes904: well don't take offense to that
(16:37:10) Donnie_K: and I'm sure some of our other burm and retic keepers would be too.
(16:37:12) eunectes904: it was certainly not meant to be offense
(16:37:48) eunectes904: it was a compliment to him or anyone else that wanted to broaden their keeper knowledge of other species of snakes from around the world
(16:38:08) Donnie_K: it was a compliment, by saying your colubrids are bigger and more advanced?
(16:38:13) eunectes904: no
(16:38:24) Donnie_K: I didn't think so... don't blow smoke up my ass
(16:38:31) Donnie_K: (16:29:36) eunectes904: troy's really cool, i can't wait to get him into working with some of these larger more "advanced" species of snakes
(16:38:37) Donnie_K: again, how am I supposed to understand that?
(16:39:03) Donnie_K: those ARE your words... right? mike wasn't typing on your keyboard...
(16:39:31) Donnie_K: get you some king cobras, then you can say more advanced
(16:39:34) Donnie_K: but not larger still
(16:39:58) eunectes904: well, yes, keeping large aggressive colubrids is one more handling step into keeping elapids
(16:40:12) eunectes904: since some of the species are commonly associated with elapids in behavior
(16:40:12) Donnie_K: yes, but you're not keeping elapids, are you?
(16:40:17) eunectes904: and no, they can't kill you
(16:40:21) eunectes904: no, i don't keep elapids
(16:40:35) Donnie_K: so how is someone that keeps burms and retics gonna come to your house to handle "larger more "advanced"" species?
(16:40:47) eunectes904: larger meaning large colubrids
(16:41:06) eunectes904: advanced meaning handling techniques
(16:41:09) Donnie_K: so you meant more advanced than a corn snake... not what he keeps at home...
(16:41:18) Donnie_K: is that what you're trying to tell me?
(16:41:29) eunectes904: i think you've made way way way too much of that statement
(16:41:37) Donnie_K: (16:29:36) eunectes904: troy's really cool, i can't wait to get him into working with some of these larger more "advanced" species of snakes
(16:41:41) Donnie_K: again, reread it
(16:41:45) eunectes904: i was only trying to say i'm excited that he's showing interest
(16:41:50) Donnie_K: it sounds very direct and literal to me...
(16:42:26) eunectes904: and you're making a big deal out of it
(16:42:28) eunectes904: for no reason
(16:42:32) eunectes904: i'm not attacking anyone
(16:42:35) eunectes904: and i don't like to be attacked
(16:42:36) Donnie_K: yes I am, and I have a reason
(16:42:39) eunectes904: especially on a public forum
(16:42:52) Donnie_K: then get the [bleep] off my forum
(16:43:03) Donnie_K: or watch what the [bleep] you say
(16:43:21) Donnie_K: if you don't like it, you know where that little red xis
(16:43:27) Donnie_K: x is*
(16:44:16) eunectes904: if you're that offended, then it has more to do with the species sir.
(16:44:22) eunectes904: cuz there's nothing wrong with that statement
(16:44:27) eunectes904: it was meant to be a positive statement
(16:44:49) eunectes904: and you're welcome to PM me with it if you have any questions
(16:45:13) eunectes904: what i should of said was i'm glad people are showing interest in other species they might not see every day or at a show
(16:45:15) Donnie_K: (16:29:36) eunectes904: troy's really cool, i can't wait to get him into working with some of these larger more "advanced" species of snakes
(16:45:17) eunectes904: does that sound any better?
(16:45:26) Donnie_K: it has to do with you comparing yourself with people who keeps the same things I keep
(16:45:33) Donnie_K: you can't bull[bleep] me jay
(16:45:46) Donnie_K: I've let your [bleep] slide many times before, but I'm not [bleep]ing stupid
(16:45:51) eunectes904: that's referring directly to large rare colubrids
(16:46:15) Donnie_K: yes, as compared to...
(16:46:23) eunectes904: and its' in no way demeaning to anything else anyone owns

honestly man this is a case of needig to think before you type. you may have meant to say larger coloubrids but what you said was larger more advanced species. and to someone that keeps retics/burms/condas etc that would be a very argumenative statement.

I think you should take your licks and get over it.

Don't get your panties in a bunch just because somebody else's are, unless of course you like 'em like that. Some people will jump on any excuse for an argument or just get online in a bad mood. Brush it off.

oh i'm not upset in any way. I understand some people do that. I was just asking others to comment if what i said WAS offensive to other reptile keepers than i totally apologize. I have great respect for people that keep reptiles of all types. We're in this for them right.

I don't think it's offensive at all. The other guy was out of line. I just don't think he understands what "advanced" means in terms of snake husbandry. A green tree python is an intermediate-level snake, while a ball python is a beginner-level snake. The GTP is a more "advanced" species. That doesn't mean ball pythons are a piece of cake to care for (depends on the keeper, I guess), that they're any "less" of a snake, or that GTPs are somehow "better" than balls. It just means that GTPs need a much more specific environment than balls in order to be healthy.

I own both species, and I have no problems saying that GTPs are more advanced than ball pythons, or that rattlesnakes are more advanced than either of them. It has nothing to do with one specie being "better" than another.

Sounds to me like this guy doesn't understand the word "advanced" in this context (not necessarily his fault) and is getting his knickers in a twist because of it. If he would've calmed down enough to listen to your explanation, he might've figured it out. But because he seems to be one of those people that blow up at stupid, little things, he wasn't about to listen to you. So...don't worry about it. Not your fault.
