A breeding issue - but whose?
We are still debating on what to do with Big Momma, so please feel free to tell us what you think.
Big Momma is one of the girls we purchased as a part of a breeding trio at Hamburg on April 26th. It was her, Thunder and Zion. She has been bred twice now since we brought her home - both times with Thunder. We were told when we got her that she had been with him and laid 18 eggs not long before, but this is just hearsay really from the people we got them from, as Zion was also supposedly with Thunder but never produced until we put her with Storm. Since then, we have seen NO signs of Big Momma being gravid, not even an abnormal weight gain that would lead me to think she was producing and reabsorbing or something. I am not sure if this is her fault or Thunder not doing his job correctly, as I never physically saw them lock up, although I watched multiple times with him chasing her around and trying in the week we had them together both times.
So we have a dilemma - do we put her with a proven male (Storm or Rames) and see what happens to rule out the issue of her being infertile, or just keep trying with Thunder? I figure by putting her with a proven male and she does not produce, it will tell me that the issue is more likely with her. I cannot prove that 100% until Thunder gets himself a girl, but it certainly would tip the bar in his favor. If she does produce, it tells me that either Thunder is shooting blanks, or just not locking up properly, and I can try him with a different girl to see what happens.
I know this might sound mean or wrong, but we purchased these guys to be breeders, and if Big Momma is the issue, we will most likely sell her and get another female. Thunder, even if it proves to be the issue, will not go anywhere, as we have really bonded with him as a pet. I know it sounds mean, but Big Momma just isn't as close with us as Thunder, and it wouldn't be as hard for us to part with her.
So, what would you do in this case?
