HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. -- Police found an albino hedgehog, a sugar glider and a Savannah monitor lizard among 13 dead animals at a nonprofit nature education center.
About 75 animals were being kept at the AnimaLogic Nature's Learning Center, where police and Henderson County Animal Control officers found the severely decomposed remains yesterday.
While investigators don't know what killed the animals, neglect appears to have played a factor.
So far, no charges have been filed.
A Savannah monitor lizard is native to Africa and can grow up to 4 feet long. A sugar glider is a small possum found in Australia.
Its Web site says the center offered guided tours and programs and recently moved to a new location in downtown Hendersonville. Its funding comes from sponsorships and admission fees.
