Mega Mites

Does anybody Know where I can get them?? I'm having an issue with a recent import emerald and I really dont want to use prevent-a-mite. The mega-mites site seems to be out of commission. Did they go out of buissness?? If so does anybody know another place I can get them from??

Just wondering.....

I bought some last month for a new import and it wiped all mites out in a few days and I haven't seen 1 since.

I can't say I've even heard of the stuff.

Have you thought of using other tactics to rid your snakes of mites? There is another thread that shows a link to a site with good information on getting rid of mites using Nix. We've just recently started using the stuff (only once so far) but I must admit it seems to have done the job very well.

The problem with Provent-A-Mite is the way it's used and the residues that are left on the sides of enclosures. When dealing with more sensitive species or those which drink from the glass it's often easier to find a non-chemical solution than to take the time to use a riskier one safely.

Not knocking Provent-A-Mite but between it, Black Knight and people using Nix... a LOT of arboreals (and candoia and pretty much any burrowing species) have been essentially poisoned through owner misuse. Fog an enclosure with a spray and you can't let anything drink off the sides of it. Far quicker and easier to use the soil mites on species where residue ingestion is an issue.

Mega Mites are soil mites... a nonparasitic predatory species that eats snake (and rodent and I think bird) mites that are a problem in captive collections... Since they go through the same life cycle as the mites you want to get rid of and a population will subsist as long as there is food you usually only need a single application for small collections. After the parasitic mites are gone the predatory mites die off as well and the entire thing is accomplished without any toxins or poisons being used which... as I said above... is absolutely perfect for any species that might be inclined to drink off the sides of their enclosure, any species that tend to bury themselves in their substrate or any individual enclosures or collections where there are species that are simply more sensitive (i.e.- fogging an enclosure with provent-a-mite leaves some in the air, not a great thing if there are say... chams in an enclosure half an inch away).

Also great if you get mites or fleas in your feeder colonies. Can't use chemicals on something you're going to be feeding off (Saw a BCI fed a rat that had been treated with kitten flea powder to get rid of mites once, wasn't pretty) and the mega mites will chow down on any of the parasitic species pretty quickly.
