A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL THE ADVICE
Thanks to all the Monitor keepers on Fauna Classifieds whom gave me more info then I could assimilate.
Okay, I would like to discuss my thought process for selecting the reptile I will keep.
First I have a very big Sulcata tortoise that just hit 95 lbs. He was a rescue from Fairbanks Alaska in 2008. He was feed a diet that had too much protein. I have since moved him to grass diet and noticed the scutes have all flatten out and are begging to look like a normal Sulcata tortoise.
Second I’m in the process of building a reptile room in our new Barn. My wife was none too happy about losing a stall. But since I started from scratch I can make all the improvements I need to make it a safe room.
Third since I need an environment fitting for an African Desert reptile I needed a monitor that would share a similar climate.
I considered the following:
Red Ackie
Savannahs
Asian Water Monitors
Nile Monitors
Croc Monitors
Green Tree Monitor
Black Throat
White Throat
Gouldi Flavirus
I eliminated the follower after three months of research:
Asian Water Monitor: A good possibility but NO not a good mix for me
Nile Monitors: NO Love them been around them but NO
Croc Monitors: NO WAY Love them been around them but NO way
Green Tree Monitor: NO, not experienced enough at this time. Maybe later
Gouldi Flavirus: NO not a good mix for me.
I spent the last 6 months researching/reading everything I could on the remaining monitors and for me the BLACK THROAT after careful consideration is the best mix for me.
I fully understand the size and responsibility for my pick and I have come to the conclusion I could meet all he/she needs. My enclosure will be 11’ long X 5’ tall X by 5’ wide when he gets bigger. I have a nice 75 gal tank with my version of a RETES stack. All temps seem right on the mark.
MY BLACK THRAOT MONIOTR will arrive Wednesday the 27th. I waited four months to get a younger one and I found a nice on out of Palm Springs, CA.
Thanks again for all the help and advice
