How to Make your yard into a Wildlife Habitat!!!

I've bought a house (my first) and have moved in... and now this is my first spring. I'm going to have my front and back yards landscaped very thoroughly. This is what I want to know.

What can I do to convince all the wonderful critters to come live in my yard?

So far, I've planned on the backyard being a mishmosh of shrubbery and bushes and trees... though the trees will take years to grow. Lots of rocks will be strategically placed throughout. I have birdfeeders already, and have found some flowering plants that would be attractive for finches (because they seed), butterflies, hummingbirds, etc. Of course I'll need a birdbath.

Attracting birds is fairly easy business. I also want to welcome the rest of the critter world, though.

A small pond, filled with small fish? I'd appreciate input. Maybe I'm aiming too high, but this is my first house and I absolutely hate lawns of straight grass. I love to work in the small garden I have now.

Well anyway, I thought if anyone would know how to incorporate plantwork and animalwork into a nice mix, it would be the people on this website.

So please, let me know what you think!
